8/6/36:
Jack Lovelock of New Zealand captures the gold medal in a star-studded 1500-meter race in the Olympic Games at Berlin in the world-record time of 3:47.8, shaving a full second of Bill Bonthron’s previous standard. Glenn Cunningham of Kansas finishes second when he is unable to match Lovelock’s finishing kick in the final lap. Cunningham’s time of 3:48.4 also beats the previous world record, while finishers three through five, 1932 gold medalist Luigi Beccali of Italy, Archie San Romani of the United States and Philip Edwards of Canada, all post times lower than the previous Olympic record.
