8/1/48:
More than 70,000 fans pack Municipal Stadium to watch the Cleveland Indians sweep the Boston Red Sox, 12-2 and 6-1, behind route-going performances by Bob Lemon and Sam Zoldak. Lemon, a fine hitter for a pitcher, has three hits and three RBIs, including one of his 37 lifetime homers, to lead the first game rout. In the nightcap, Zoldak, a trade-deadline pickup from the Browns, scatters seven hits for one of his nine wins after being acquired. The Indians will need every one of them. They’ll eventually tie Boston for the AL pennant, necessitating a one-game playoff that the Indians will win on their way to their first world championship since 1920.
