Bronson Arroyo, a 2003 Red Sox (http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/baseball/red_sox/index.bg) [team stats (http://scores.heraldinteractive.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=bostonherald&page=mlb/teams/028/teamstats.aspx?team=028)] teammate of David Ortiz (http://www.bostonherald.com/search/?topic=David+Ortiz) [stats (http://scores.heraldinteractive.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=bostonherald&page=mlb/teams/028/players.aspx?id=3405,pos=DH,team=028)] and Manny Ramirez (http://www.bostonherald.com/search/index.bg?topic=Manny+Ramirez) [stats (http://scores.heraldinteractive.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=bostonherald&page=mlb/teams/028/players.aspx?id=3810,pos=LF,team=028)], said yesterday he would not be shocked to discover his name on the list of 104 major league ballplayers who tested positive in the spring of 2003 for using performance-enhancing drugs.

His reason may shed light on what may have happened to Ortiz in 2003, as well.

Back then, Arroyo said via phone from Cincinnati, he was using both androstenedione, which was not banned until the 2004 season, and amphetamines, which were not banned until 2006.

I think what Arroyo is saying is not to jump to conclusions with Ortiz. Ortiz could have been using something that was legal at the time, but unknowingly laced with something that wasn't... Thats why Arroyo said he stopped using the stuff after hearing it could be laced with steroids.

Arroyo didnt just come out and say it for the heck of it...

Ortiz once said the only thing you'd ever find on any of his tests is rice and beans. xliarx

The Red Sox are probably pretty happy with Ortiz. His self-proposed 1 year ban as a user would save them a ton of money.

It actually DOES happen because many times the companies that are making these "supplements" want to sweeten the pot and there is no FDA regulations on them. Patrick Arnold proved during the whole BALCO process that he was out for nothing but money and Andro was a good start.
