The NFL, three other pro leagues, and the NCAA sought a temporary injunction yesterday to stop Delaware's sports-gambling plans, while the sponsor of the law called the sports organizations "blatantly hypocritical."

Shocker, and I couldn't be more sarcastic, court rules yet again the NFL, NCAA and the other leagues have no case and refuse to grant any kind of injunction.

Place your bets.

Where are all the voices saying the NCAA was on board and it was a "done deal" that playoff games would be allowed?

Delaware House Majority Leader Pete Schwartzkopf, who wrote Delaware's sports-gambling bill, said in an interview - and in a letter to the sport organizations - that they could not have it both ways.

Schwartzkopf noted that the NCAA - which threatened to prevent Delaware teams from hosting playoff games - sanctions the annual Las Vegas Bowl college football game. The NCAA men's basketball tournament also benefits from office pools with money going to the winners.

Two absolute blatant lies. If this is the guy writing your bill, you're in deep trouble.

Pete ain't the sharpest knife in the shed, but he ain't the dullest, neither. I don't see any win for the NFL in federal court. They'd be better off putting the money into their pension plan.xpeacex

Again, why do you think the NCAA trying to use the courts to legally stop betting in Delaware will/does have anything to do with them punishing student athletes that just happen to go to school in the same state? Of course the NCAA is anti-gambling, that's a no brainer and it would be shocking if they weren't in on the lawsuit. But that has absolutely nothing to do with a pre-emptive punishing of student athletes in the state.

Agreed - the NFL's case couldn't be any weaker. You can't argue that your league would be irreparably harmed by gambling when the amount of gambling that occurs already, whether in Vegas, online, or local bookies, is astronomical. Same with the NCAA, although at least they come at it with a much cleaner conscience since they've almost never have given a wink-wink to gambling. The NFL wouldn't be the NFL without it.

As a matter of fact, the NCAA Executive Committee is expected to vote today on a measure passed last month by NCAA that would allow Delaware & Montana teams to host post-season events, whether a later ruling is successful or not.

It's the right thing to do not to punish the student-athletes and universities for decisions made by state governments. Does any one with a bit of common sense disagree with that?

I know Pete and he is a loose cannon. He shoots his mouth off before he gets the facts. In short he is a typical liberal democrat and lifelong government employee.

There are cooler heads and better brains at work on this. Pete loves the spotlight. His comments should always be taken with a grain of salt the size of Lake Superior.

To his credit, Pete is a loyal Hens fan. He makes the 2 hour trip from Rehoboth to Newark most home weekends. He is a good guy to have a beer with and talk about Delaware football. By the way all of the above can also apply to Joe Biden with the exception that he doesn's have to drive 2 hours to get to a game. xsmiley_wix
