Southern University baseball coach Roger Cador, center, is all smiles at a news conference Sunday after agreeing to a three-year contract that will pay him $125,000 per year and allows him to raise up to an additional $25,000 per year. Cador, who coached without a contract last season, had interviewed twice this month for the same position at the University of New Orleans. Sitting next to Cador are Athletic Director Greg LaFleur, left, and Chancellor Kofi Lomotey.

Roger Cador went to school at Southern University, played basketball and baseball there, went on to coach both sports there and has, in the past 25 years, put together a baseball dynasty at the school.

And Sunday, for at least the sixth time after being courted by another school, he reaffirmed his lifelong commitment by agreeing to a three-year contract which will pay him at least $125,000 per year.

Cador had interviewed at the University of New Orleans twice in the past few weeks, but after a day of negotiating with SU officials, he agreed Sunday to stay where he’s always been.

“It tells me there must be something that is so powerful that keeps me yearning to come back and give it a little bit more,” Cador said.

Southern baseball - the top team of any sort in the SWAC. A huge financial priority put on it.

Now - will SU follow through in upgrading facilities? Getting that pitching coach on staff? And playing the maximum amount of regular season games allowed by the NCAA? And will they bolster their schedule, RPI and get some more wins...?

Time will tell, we'll see. Based on what I have seen, you never believe anything until it becomes true between Louisiana politics and the current economy.

Any feedback from the academic side of things on how when they are getting sliced and diced, that a head baseball coach got a "hmph"...? Figured they would say something...

Coach Cador deserves everything he gets at Southern and then some. I remember helping paint the outfield wall a few years back. There aren't many coaches who have done more with less.

He needs to get paid more. At the Max, he can only make 150k a year. He needs to go to a bigger School. I wonder how much LSU' baseball coaches make a year?

The $150k at Southern is a great deal for a SWAC coach in any sport sans football.

Last year, Paul Maineri made $150k and that number can not be right, because I doubt he was #2 in pay in the state of public schools. He had to get money from TAF, radio, TV, apparel, etc.

ULL's coach made $100k and UNO's $160k. I believe both figures were at least $20k higher due to outside monies (TV, radio).

Cador wins SWAC championships. We'll see if he can take it up a notch. The other high paid coaches in the staff proved something.

The ULL and LSU coaches both got to the CWS (ULL did it in 1999). The UNO coach (not at Wake) got his team into the NCAA via AQ and at-larges, despite dealing with Katrina that unraveled his team.

Congrats to Coach Cador. Southern did the right thing keeping him.
