Just found this odd that UND came out with new logos and wordmarks prior to the name change. I am not sure if this was covered on here, but I did a quick search and couldn't find anything.

i think it looks great, i just wonder if it means that they are keeping sioux, or they are just not wise, because if they change names they will redesign again or go without a mascot in their design.

Very sharp!

I think this redesign covers their bases, if they add a new mascot or not. They could incorporate it into this scheme without a problem.

Do they have to get rid of the "Fighting Sioux" name and the Indian Head Logo and they can keep "North Dakota Sioux"? I haven't heard.

I like the new interlocking "N" and "D" which don't look like the ones used by Notre dame. I also like the curved school name with the name of the sport written underneath like those shown here (http://www.und.edu/dept/our/web_assets/logos/NewArtwork.pdf).

I think the primary reason for the rebranding was due to the out of court settlement between Notre Dame and University of North Dakota on the use of the interlocking ND. I believe that Notre Dame has the copyright/trademark. But, the University of North Dakota was using this prior to Notre Dame. So, Notre Dame is allowing UND to use the interlocking ND. But, they must use something in conjunction with it to identify the school. I believe the Notre Dame has the same basic rules.

You've got to have a nickname, even it's a lame one like the Stanford Cardinal. Even as a Bison fan, I like UND's colors. The green is close to the shade of the Burlington Northern (before they merged with the Santa Fe railroad) that rolled across the northern plains.

My hope is that they simply become North Dakota............no nickname.

I suggested that for UL-Monroe fans back when they switched over from Indians to Warhawks...just simply drop the nickname altogether and let the fans continue to call the team the Fighting Sioux...I'm sure you would still get some in the media to continue calling you Sioux, or "the team formerly known as the Sioux."

It would certainly be unique and send a message at the same time.

Mmmmm...nostalgia time. You guys have the Soo Line up there, too? BN and Soo Line was a big rivalry in Minnesnowta. I was from a BN family and my friend's dad worked for Soo Line. He also suffered the losing side of the football arguements since I was freshly moved up from Nebraska, and he was a Goopher in a time when their glory years were mostly long forgotten.

Is there any significance to green in ND? Both UND and NDSU with a similar green in their unis. xeyebrowx I'm trying to think of another state where the two biggest state schools have one same primary color. xeyebrowx

UVA and VT both have orange.

Agriculture, I would guess. NDSU is green and gold (or green and yellow, depending on who you ask), which pretty much represents the vast fields of wheat and barley covering the area.

I don't know if that was the explicit reason or not, for either team, though.

UND chose kelly green and pink because they are the preppiest colors -

“THE VIRTUES OF PINK AND GREEN. The wearing of the pink and the green is the surest and quickest way to group identification within the Prep set. There is little doubt for doubt or confusion when you see these colors together – no one else in his right mind would sport such a chromatically improbable juxtaposition”.

UND's school colors of Kelly Green and Prairie Rose(pink) represent the state flower. Our official athletic colors are Kelly Green and White. Although, we have seen pink being used alot more in our marketing and merchandising.

UND Fact Book (http://www.und.edu/dept/our/factbook/html/colors.htm)

COLORS -- In April 1889, the student body met and chose as school colors the pink and green of the prairie rose, "suggestive of our green prairies and rosy prospects." In the 1920s green and white were adopted as colors for UND athletic teams while pink and green continued to be used on the academic hoods of the University.

I was unable to find any history of how NDSU's school colors were chosen. Any bison fans have any insight?

The colors were ratified one year after Archibald E. Minard wrote the alma mater, "The Yellow and the Green" (http://www.ndsu.edu/instruct/isern/yellow.htm)

Here's how Minard recalled his composition of the verses:

"The Yellow and the Green" was written, as I recall it now, in the spring of 1908. Professor and Mrs. [Henry L.] Bolley, at whose home I was staying, had spoken often of the need for a college song, and one Sunday afternoon some ideas began to take shape. The aim was to weave the college colors, yellow and green, with life and scenery characteristic of the State, for I thought that the verses, if they chanced to have any value, might make a state song as well as a college song.
I had just come to North Dakota from the East in 1904 and had spent three weeks of 1905 in the harvest field, being No. 50 on the payroll of a big Grandin farm near Blanchard. It was my first experience in the wheat fields. My impressions were rather vivid: the throng of casual labor drifting in on freight cars, the endless yellow fields, the monotonous sweating labor from dawn until after dark and the mosquitoes and the prairie roses, the abundant eating and the wretched beds, all under a sky of marvelous height and sweep with the most gorgeous sunsets I had ever seen. Some of this I tried to embody in "The Yellow and the Green."

based on the school song: The Yellow and The Green

Ho! a cheer for Green and Yellow,
Up with Yellow and the Green;
They’re the shades that deck our prairies
Far and wide with glorious sheen,
Fields of waving green in springtime,
Golden yellow in the fall—
How the great high-arching heaven
Looks and laughs upon it all!

Eastern is blue and burgundy, IIRC.

Not sure if the XCSU schools all had some form of blue in their color scheme intentionally, much like the University of California System schools all are some form of Navy and Gold/Yellow, from what I remember. Irvine, Berkley, Los Angeles, Davis, Santa Barbara, Riverside are all some form of blue and gold/yellow.

I know this is not exactly what you were talking about, but the University of Texas System requires all schools to use orange as one of their primary colors.
Austin uses Orange/white
UT-Arlington, UTSA, and UTEP Orange/blue
UTPA, UT-Dallas orange and green

Does the entire UC system use blue and gold? I know UCLA and Cal do, but not sure about the rest.

EDIT: I answered my own question. Yes, all UC schools use a variation of blue and gold.

http://www.commencement.ucla.edu/history.cfm

The University Colors - All UC campuses share variations of blue and yellow as school colors. The colors were chosen in June 1873. Blue was chosen as it symbolizes the ocean and the local wild flowers. It was also Yale University's color; many of the original more prominent professors, the first University President, the incumbent President in 1872, and the fathers of many of the undergraduates were Yale alumni. Gold was chosen as California was the Golden State, the Berkeley campus overlooked the Golden Gate, and the golden poppy was California's state flower.

I like the new logo it gets us away from Notre Dame. UND vs UND in hockey...lucky Notre Dame's colors are different. Plus we use green because after the winters here we pray for green grass instead of white or yellow. As for the nickname i think it will be replaced...we have to have a nickname and not a stupid color nickname either no offense Dartmouth. Its better for marketing and fans will still cheer the Sioux name even in transition. I think Roughriders have to be the favorite but they need to have a huge list and have the school (students, facilty, and alumni) vote...NOT the ND school board. Pink would be okay for all the women's teams. Plus i don't know why they aren't called the UND Lady Sioux.:)

All schools in North Dakota are part of the North Dakota University System. (http://www.ndus.edu/) So they are sister schools. North Dakota just has the 1 university system.

Shame about vacating the nickname, should it ever come to pass as it sounds inevitable. As a Wash. Redskin fan, I'm all in favor of these nicknames. Schools and pro teams shouldn't buckle under, rather partner with the tribes in question. Perhaps try to enter into a business venture together to get away from the friction.

Like your colors. The UND / UND logo issue - I both love and hate the Irish, shame they muscled you into any decision. In the end though, your school / state should be unique. The Dakotas get such little attention, hopefully you can draw some on the field...

Two things that could sour me on the 'Skins....

a) a name change due to buckling under
b) Michael Con-Vick signing

I'd immediately give up my rooting interest in the team, and would be forever neutral.

Let me put it to you this way. Even though he is unofficial, how many other teams with Native American names have a black man dressed up as the NA? Why? Because there is no way in hades that a NA would do it.

I said he's unofficial, but like you said, he IS on the tube an awful lot, so he's pseudo-official to me. The team doesn't have anyone else doing it. Have you ever seen a Florida Seminoles game intro? There's a Seminole Indian that charges onto the field on a white stead plunging a flaming spear into the field. Have you ever seen a NA in garb supporting the Skins? That's my point.

As for the NA population around DC, what does that have to do with the price of apples? If Detroit doesn't have a large Asian population, would it be OK for them to have the Detroit Slanty Eyes? GOOOOOOO DETROIT!

And that Seminole Indian is a white college kid that is historically a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. This is the fraternity that Bobby Bowden is an alum of and many on the team are active members of.

Yes, all 4 campuses of the Connecticut State University do have a shade of blue as their primary color. I think that is because the CT state flag is blue; its not an official policy or anything.
