American Mary Decker Slaney easily defeats South American Zola Budd in a 3000-meter race in London, their first meeting since Decker Slaney tripped over Budd in last year’s 3000-meter finals at the Olympics in Los Angeles and was forced to abandon the race. This time, Decker Slaney leaves no footwork to chance, leading from start to finish and winning the race in 8:32.91. Cornelia Burki of Switzerland is second, Ingrid Kristiansen of Norway runs third and Budd places fourth.
