I was curious if anybody had any concrete information, or even rumors for that matter, about candidates for Columbia's head coaching job. My friend and I were tossing around names for *****s and giggles, but every current head coach we could think of would be insane to take the job. Tavani was an interesting idea, until I pointed out that Columbia is most certainly a downgrade from Lafayette. The new Athletic Director talked the talk about improving the teams at CU, but without solid support from the University's administration, it's only talk.
Prior to leaving Union College for the Penn job in '92, Al Bagnolli was offered the Columbia job. He said he turned it down because he felt that the administration was not committed to fielding a competitive team.

I saw on Footballscoops.com that Lehigh's OC Chris Rorke was named as someone under consideration. Have no idea if that is serious or not, but I wouldn't mind seeing a change in our OC at LU. Doesn't appear to a plan or scheme. Always doing something different even if what was done before was working. Goes away from it as if the whole playbook has to be used. Too much thinking in my book and not enough focus on just executing the other team to death, rather then trying to finese all the time.

As the old proverb says, "Be careful for what you wish for..." ;) ;)

Hey Hawk--love your signature, or whatever they call it...Yes, you quoted me right ;) Though I don't think it's realistic, I'd love to see them bring Cecchini back.

Funny you should mention that, because his replacement at Union (Andino) is being thrown around as a possibility...

But I agree with your original point. Columbia is a head coaching black hole. They will have a tough time getting anyone.

:Ahem: the Lafayette game... that's a good example.. I am still in shock how Lehigh let that get away. We have a very emotional and focused team, but Lehigh should have been wise enough to avoid the collapse.

And the only reason I'd take the Columbia job is so I could wear Columbia Blue everyday of the week... I love that color

Lou Little must be spinning circles... this team has a great history.

You Lehigh guys will know this name: Dave Cecchini (http://gocrimson.collegesports.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/cecchini_dave00.html). Ivies like to hire guys with Ivy experience and he has it. He was a name I've heard alot for the CU job.

I also don't think this is necessarily the black hole it's being made out to be. In fact, I think it's finally an attractive job for the following reasons:

*Right or wrong, AD showed commitment to the program by firing Shoop. If it wasn't important to them, they would have let him meander along for another few years. Imo, that's what the old Columbia program would have done.

*Good facilities (remember this is a Fordham fan talking guys. Baker Field looks like the Taj Mahal to us).

*This past year an ex-Lion player was either named head of the BOT or was named to it and this was rumored to reflect a new attitude toward sports and football in particular.

Those 3 things lay the groundwork, imo, for the program to get competitive. Now throw into the mix that they have what could be the worst football tradition in the country (recent) and if you are a good coach you have the opportunity to make your mark as THE GUY WHO TURNED AROUND COLUMBIA. Pretty compelling imo but only if you find out that there really is a new commitment to the sport above the AD level during the i-views.

Agreed that Baker Field is a nice facility and a plus for Columbia's program.

Ivy football is a model of competitive parity over the years except for Columbia, but Brown's recent success proves you don't have to be among the H-Y-P group to be successful.

Now, if we can just say the same for those outside the L-L-C trio in the PL!

Fordham,

I hear what you're saying, but either I'm a cynic or a realist and think that is just wishful thinking. I will believe Columbia when I see it. Until then, I think it's one of the worst jobs in college football (salary aside).

Taking a quick stroll over to www.diaafootball.com (http://www.diaafootball.com), you can see just how bad they are. THEY HAVE HAD ONE WINNING SEASON SINCE 1973! Bad, bad, bad.

I don't think that they are capable of pulling out of this death dive, and frankly, if they weren't in the Ivy League, I think they would have dropped football like NYU.

here's a long shot but what the hell...what about John Troxell from Lafayette? Not only does John have Ivy experience...he has Columbia experience (he got his masters there while he was an assistant back in the late 90s). He has been a part of turnarounds and winning teams wherever he has gone. He is a student of the game. He is relatively local...hmmm...they could do worse!

Not a bad pick. I think that Columbia should go with someone with local ties to the program, and someone who will be in for the long haul. Plus, it would break up the Lafayette coaching staff - fine by me! :D

In a shameless blog plug, I talk about this there.

You are so right. That game was not lost on the Hail Mary, but in the first quarter when LU should have had 3 scores and got none. If something's working, why go away from it? :(

Hahaha, I enjoyed that one. I am probably the only person around who wears Columbia athletics shirts.

I can only thank God I was not alive during that time period. :shakingma

And yah, Pard94 is right... except there'd be a few more in the photo.

Yes he was elected to the head of the BOT.. don't remember who, but I read it on the subway.. he was a member of their last Ivy League champion team as a matter of fact.. (1961).

You say that this reflects the new change in attitude towards athletics... then what would you say about David Stern's tenure and attitude? He is head of the NBA.. surprised he wouldn't care about CU athletics.. just skeptical about the new attitude.
