Fordham posted their presumed starters for this season. The five OL average
6'3" & 289 lbs. Did not include him but the TE is also large at 6/4" and 240 lbs. The three DL average a bit over 6'2" and 276 lbs. Here there is an imbalance as the NG weighs 308 & another lineman 235.
While size is not everything, would be interested in comments re. the relative size for FCS competition.

Georgetown's 2008 offensive line averaged 260-275, defensive line 245-260. The heaviest player was 285.
(In some games the opponent's D-line were about the same size as Georgetown's O-line. )
The Georgetown roster has not been published for 2009 online so I can't estimate the 2009 lines.

We've got some 300 pounders on the O-line. Most of our OL are around 280. I have no idea what our depth chart looks like though. On the D-Line I'd say we are 250 lbs. on the average.

When we were an Air Raid team under Hal Mumme and Dennis Roland, we had HUGE offensive linemen that weren't all that mobile, but were pretty good pass-protectors...I think one year we averaged close to 6-4, 320 across the board...over the last couple of years, we've tried to go leaner and more athletic and only have one 300 pounder projected to start...if you go by our program sizes, our tackles will be 6-4, 290 and 6-5, 260 (270 now); guards will be 6-4, 280 and 6-2, 340; and our center will either be 6-2, 295 (over 300) or 6-3, 260 (270 now), depending on who gets the nod...our TEs are 6-4, 240 and 6-6, 245.
Typically, D-lines are smaller and quicker than O-linemen and inside guys are usually much bigger than DEs, though not always the case...
Our defensive line may possibly start 6-3, 305 and 6-3, 295 at DT and 6-3, 265 and 6-2, 250 at DE...depends on who steps up.

Stony Brook's OL is the largest in recent memory, averaging right around 300 pds overall. Starting lineup will likely average over 300. Should be a great support to boost the potent run game.
Defensive line is a bit tempered, averaging about 260 or so. Its a vet line though, so should be interesting this year.

UCA's O-Line:
71 Nick Partridge OL 6-4 292 Fr. White Hall, Ark. White Hall
73 Lane Freiwald OL 6-7 324 Sr. Little Rock, Ark. Parkview
74 Matt Dickerson OL 6-5 284 So. Monroe, La. Neville
75 Dominique Allen OL/TE 6-3 252 Fr. Houston, Texas Madison
76 Will Merritt OL 6-5 292 Sr. Vidalia, La. Sterlington
77 Joe Lehocky OL 6-4 285 So. Albuquerque, N.M. Cibola
It appears the Defensive Line is about 6'3" and 275 on average.

Not sure who all of our starters will be yet, but there is a good chance that our average lineman will be 6' 2.5" and 303 lbs. That is slightly skewed by one 6' 5" 341lb. behemoth. The guys I included above are all returning linemen; we have some recruits coming in that are bigger than most of the guys returning, but I'm hoping that they will be redshirted. We also have a sophmore who isn't included above though he may well start that is listed at 6' 7" and 245, but that's what he has been listed at since he signed with us and after two years in the program I'm pretty certain he's gained a good bit of weight.
Oh, only talking about O-line here.

In the past we had big guys, 6-4 to 6-8 300 pounders. Now that we've switched from a pro style straight drop game to the spread, I'm guessing the new emphasis will be on speed, quickness, and mobility over sheer bulk.
As for the d-line..........it's been so long since we've had one I'm not sure how big they are.

The biggest two lines I've seen in FCS was FAMU in 2001 (all lardazzes and got tired and subsequently schooled by GSU's smaller d-line) and NDSU in 2006 (all big, athletic, well schooled and good).

As long as I'm correct in assuming the starters for NDSU the O-line will go:

OG: Buckman - 6'5" 312
OG: Foster - 6'2" 295

A very rough guess, but App's starting OL should be average 6' 1.5" and 270. 260 to 285 range. But believe there could be changes in starter during camp, never know. Seems our OL has been a little smaller due to wanting some speed for blocking down field for runners.
Starters on DL guess would be 6'3" and 250, but we rotate a lot and have a lot of different sized players depending on the play/scheme.

Our projected starters on the OL are:
LT - Thomas Gray 6-4 332
LG - Jacquez Gray 6-4 308
C - Jon Weber 6-2 290
RG - Josh Fields 6-2 292
RT - Charlie Sanford 6-3 301
That's an average of about 6-3, 304lbs. If you think these guys are slow and not mobile, then you are in for a big surprise.
The defensive line, in our 4-3 will have:
DE - John Michael Clay 6-6 265
DT - Patrick Hatcher 6-3 280
DT - Jeremy Towns 6-4 288
DE - Nicholas Williams 6-5 292
I don't think that size will be a weakness for Samford this year. xsmiley_wix

Yeah, they were some well-fed "youngins"...in fact, I can remember Hal constantly staying on them to "EAT! EAT!" and EAT some more. He wanted the biggest guys he could find who could back peddle and form a pocket. That's why Air Raid teams will always struggle to run the ball on obvious running downs. We saw that with SFA last year.

Not unusual to have a big disparity between the DTs and the DEs. Emphasis these days is on speed at the corners. The Tribe will play 5 DEs this year, and all are between 240 and 250. The five DTs who will play range from 265 to 300.

While certainly size is a factor for o-line and d-line it is also the most over-rated aspect of of o-lines and d-lines. I have seen many "undersized" lines whip the crap out of much larger lines.

IMy senior year I was 6'3" 275lbs. And after game 4 an enormous C being moved to C from G. Our O-line averaged 6"3 and 280lbs, post C injury(mid Hofstra game, thaks to UB) We were giants in the ealry 90's. 5 years later almost all Towson o-linemen were 300+. Its mind boggling how in 10 years we were strivingto get up to 300, and after all are oer it.

I agree. But more as the oline rahter the d-line.
A light o-line can dominate, if running based, but a light d-line can get their a$$es kicked.

Size, strength and athleticism are all important. If a guy is lighter, but can get tossed, then his athleticism is neutralized. If big guys aren't athletic, they can get worked.
The biggest o-line W&M has ever faced was the 1996 Jackson State team in the playoffs. They averaged around 6'5" and 330, but struggled against a very athletic Tribe DL.

You can't prove that! Besides, my Jerry Ball physique probably had me off getting oxygen at the time said injury occured xwhistlex
Though i will say that you guys had to be the best pass pro team i have ever seen. I also agree with your other post, i think a lighter o-line can use speed and athleticism to dominate a bigger d-line. A d-line that is too light in the a$$, gets shoved around and that is just not good.

Looks like the Griz and Bison lines are comparable.
Griz look to average 6'6" and 309 on the offensive line, and 6'3" and 265 on the defensive line (with projected starters--the defensive line might be about 5 lbs. less on average depending on who is picked as starter at one DE).
Griz lines look to be just a hair taller and lighter than the Bison's, but not really that different.

I don't know the answer to the "NDSU linemen-North Dakota high schools" question, but the presumptive starters for the Griz are 60% Montanan on the offensive line (3 of 5) and 75% on the defensive line (3 of 4).

App St defies this standard year in year out.................App has an offensive line that avgs 6"2" and 260 lbs on offense and a little smaller on D.line and ................
kicks Michigans A$$ with it
SO MUCH FOR 6"5' 300
Thank you
No, they don't "def[y] this standard", they run a different kind of offense. As an example, Montana has very large offensive lines year-in and year-out, but that's because they run a more traditional offense, not a spread offense. In the spread, the quarterback is an extension to the running game as well as a passer. App State has just been lucky enough to have a great player running the show for the last three years (and another one just prior to him).
When App State ran a more traditional offense (for example, when Joe Burchette was the QB, back around the turn of the century ;) ), their lines were larger and the quarterback was not a very serious running threat.
Montana (and NDSU, as another example) runs a different offense than App State that requires a different type of offensive lineman, with drop-back passing as a huge part of the offense, and the quarterback runs sparingly, not as a first option in most cases. With less mobile QBs, you need more protection.
And, lest you think Montana's O-linemen are all plodders (I can't speak to NDSU's O-linemen), almost all of Montana's offensive linemen over the last few years have been pretty good high school basketball players as well as standout high school football players. Montana's coaches have traditionally looked for tall, large framed kids with basketball skills, which shows that they have at least some decent footwork, rather than shorter guys with wide girths that provide them with their poundage.
You'll often see Montana offensive linemen come into the program as freshman at 240-260 lb, 6'5"-6'7", and then get bulked up for two or three years before they become the 300+ lb. giant who sees the field for the Griz. Then, after graduating, they drop back down to a much lower weight (there was just a post on eGriz yesterday about the wedding of a former Griz lineman, who has dropped 70 lbs since his playing days, and a member of the wedding party, another former Griz lineman, who had dropped 80).

As long as I'm correct in assuming the starters for NDSU the O-line will go:
OT: Ebel - 6'6" 308
OT: Arnt - 6'6" 310
OG: Buckman - 6'5" 312
OG: Foster - 6'2" 295
C: Richard - 6'2" 322
Average - 6'4" 310
D-Line:
DT: Fairbarn - 6'2" 298
DT: Gratzek - 6'2" 280
DE: Boyer - 6'4" 248
DE: Reid - 6'1" 263
Average - 6'2" 272
The bigger they are the harder they fall. Bring'em on down to Texas in September. They will be yacking like the Montana players did in 2004. No air conditioned dome in Huntsvegas!!xnonox
Kats O-Line
T Riley Smith 6-4 290
G Schmidt, Hunter 6-3, 303
C Jordan Bowersox 6-2,277
G 64 Travis Best 6-2 302
T Travis Watson 6-4 295

xcoffeex Already heard that from Nicholls State and Northwestern State. Funny enough, both of their teams were the ones with hands on hips during the second half.

The biggest two lines I've seen in FCS was FAMU in 2001 (all lardazzes and got tired and subsequently schooled by GSU's smaller d-line) and NDSU in 2006 (all big, athletic, well schooled and good).
Bingo. That is my concern. It seems to me that size alone of the O-line is not important. A lot depends on what the offense is doing.
ASU's OL for 2009 averages like @ 270 lbs. (or less). As noted in this thread, much of that is due to the spread option offense. Big, fat boys just cannot do it. If the QB wants to run from the spread, he needs the OL out in front, thus smaller, quicker, faster linemen are called for. Kerry Brown - 6'4" - 300 lbs at Rt Gd. was the exception - but he was a very good, pulling guard - now on the Redskins roster.
"when Joe Burchette was the QB, back around the turn of the century" - excellent turn of the phrase, CrunchGriz!! Joe was the last ASU QB to run the power I. And, no Joe was not a runner. He was 6'4", 240 lbs. w/ a cannon of an arm. He was also a darn good blocker - he steam-rolled over a number of LBs & corners on various reverses & running plays. However, Joe was so slow, I am not sure he could now play on App's OL. Just a completely different player than today's.

Lineman is what ND (and the upper midwest in general) is good for. You'll very rarely find a D1 caliber speedster in North Dakota but you'll find a lot of "hogs" here.... of both genders xlolxxlolxxlolxxlolxxlolx
Traditionally, North Dakota is represented very well on the NDSU's squad at the blocking positions like OL, FB, and TE.
