NCAA may soften stance on playoffs

Delaware colleges and universities could get a reprieve and be able to host NCAA playoff games, despite the state's recent approval of sports betting.

The NCAA Executive Committee will vote next month on a proposal recently approved by its championships cabinet that would allow teams that earn the right, through successful competition, to host NCAA games, said Tom Yeager, commissioner of the Colonial Athletic Association.

Well in one way, the NCAA has not prohibited playoff games to be hosted in SC. The original ruling was that UD could not host a playoff game which is simply nutz.

Several members of the Montana State Government sent letters, made phone calls or what ever to the NCAA regarding this matter. From what I heard last, the NCAA never "clearly" responded.

I bet it was our (Montana's) threatening to withhold hunting/fishing privileges from NCAA officials that got them to reconsider! Either that or a new requirement that NCAA Officials who want to hunt in Montana this fall clearly and in big orange letters, have "NCAA Official" visible on their hunting jackets! (Just kidding but it may be a good idea!)

This is not a fait accompli by any stretch. It's in the hands of the NCAA Executive commitee, and while this piece might be a fine opening statement by the prosecution, there's a long way to go for this IMO.

Ask any Jacksonville State fan how "softening stance" and "NCAA rules" worked for them.

I see this proposal as an indication of three things.

The ncaa wants to avoid litigation. They would surely lose in Montana (Montana has better facts than Delaware), and might also lose in Delaware. Lost litigation would make it harder for the ncaa to enforce this policy in other jurisdictions.

The ncaa is noticing some of the pressure coming from politicians, including over this issue and the BCS. This battle could result in the ncaa having politicians put pressure on them (and start investigations) for other matters that are more important to them.

The statements and positions of the ncaa this summer came from staff--not from committees composed of representatives of the members. The members are much more likely to have clearer and pig-picture thinking on this issue. By the way, judging from the public statements of the ncaa woman in charge of the gambling subject, I don't think she's very smart. She said some stupid things--many of which didn't have to be said.

Agreed. It seems that the NCAA wants to move this along as quickly and quietly as possible after all of the initial bluster and publicity.
