Bud Selig today said he will work to eliminate the ability for suspended players to head to rehab assignments to get back in game shape prior to the end of their suspensions.
But is that fair?
Sure the player broke the rules and should be punished... but should teams who in a lot of cases may be unaware of what their players maybe doing be punished further by having to wait even longer before a player returns so the player can head out on a rehab assignment after the suspension is up?
While not a fair comparison for obvious reasons, injured players can be sent on a rehab assignment before their eligible to be activated so they are ready to be activated, why not the same for suspended players?
The biggest penalty for a suspended player is the loss of wages, the actual suspension of the player is more of a penalty for the team. The player still doesn't get paid while on rehab, so why should we care?
I may very well be in the minority here, but I think players should be allowed to head on a rehab assignment prior to the end of their suspension. No need to punish the team even more then they already are.
