On the 50th anniversary of Carl Hubbell’s legendary five straight strikeouts in the 1934 All-Star Game, the National League stages a modern-day reprise as part of a 3-1 victory over the American League at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. In the fourth inning Fernando Valenzuela of the Dodgers strikes out the side in order, and Mets rookie Dwight Gooden does the same in the fifth. The six consecutive K’s set a new ASG record. Dale Murphy and Gary Carter homer for the NL, and Carter is named the game’s MVP for the second time in four years.
