7/11/61:
British middleweight Terry Downes takes the world title from American Paul Pender at the Wembley Pool in London when cuts force Pender to retire after nine rounds. It’s a complete reversal of their previous bout in Boston in January, when Downes was stopped on cuts in the seventh round. Downes is the aggressor throughout tonight’s bout, scoring a knockdown in the sixth round. The title will change hands again when the two meet next April. Pender will score a unanimous decision at Boston Garden to regain the crown.
