MIKE DENBROCK COMPLETES INDIANA STATE FOOTBALL COACHING STAFF
Veteran Coach Has Worked At Stanford, Notre Dame, Washington, Grand Valley State, Michigan State and Illinois State
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State head football coach Trent Miles announced earlier today (July 8) the addition of football coaching veteran Mike Denbrock to the Sycamore football coaching staff. Denbrock is the program’s Associate Head Coach as well as Special Teams Coordinator. Denbrock will also focus on working with the ISU linebackers on the defensive side of the football.
“It is with great excitement that I announce the addition of Mike Denbrock to the Sycamore football family,” Miles commented. “Mike is a long time friend and an excellent football coach, but an even better person. He is as knowledgeable about the game of football as any coach you will find at any level of the game. He is extremely well respected around the nation. His experience and knowledge will be of great benefit to our program as we continue to move forward.”
Denbrock comes to Indiana State from the University of Washington, where he spent the last five seasons as the program’s offensive line coach.
He worked for a total of nine seasons under Tyrone Willingham, as he coached the offensive line and tight ends at Notre Dame and Stanford before coming to Washington.
In 2007, the Husky line led the way for Louis Rankin, the first 1,000-yard rusher at the UW since 1997. Additionally, quarterback Jake Locker ran for 986 yards, finishing a mere 14 yards short of the 1,000-yard plateau. Center Juan Garcia earned All-Pac-10 second-team honors.
During his time at Notre Dame, Denbrock’s tackles and tight ends helped Irish sophomore quarterback Brady Quinn have one of the most successful passing seasons in Notre Dame his*tory in 2004. In fact, Denbrock was instrumental in the Fighting Irish’s recruitment of Quinn, who went on to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft in 2007.
Those players were also a contributing factor as the Irish produced 1,000-yard rushers in both of Denbrock’s first two seasons in South Bend. During his time at Notre Dame, Denbrock tutored several offensive linemen who were NFL Draft selections: Jim Molinaro, Jeff Faine, Jordan Black, Sean Mahan and Brennan Curtin.
Prior to coming to Notre Dame, Denbrock worked in a similar capacity under Willingham for one season at Stanford in 2001. Denbrock’s line helped lead the way for a Stanford rushing attack which ranked 23rd in the nation in 2001 and led the Pac-10, averaging more than 200 yards per game and scoring 27 touchdowns.
At Stanford he coached first-round NFL draft pick Kwame Harris (San Francisco 49ers in 2003) and Kirk Chambers, who was selected in the fifth round by Cleveland.
Before his stint at Stanford, Denbrock was the assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and offensive and defensive line coach for the Buf*falo Destroyers of the Arena Football League in 1999-2000. In his second year, Denbrock helped the Destroyers land a playoff berth.
Prior to his two years in Buffalo, Denbrock coached at his alma mater, Grand Valley State (1992-98), following coaching stops at Missouri Valley Football Conference member Illinois State (1990-91) and Michigan State (1988-89).
At NCAA Division II Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich., Denbrock was the offensive co*ordinator and defensive coordinator at different times during his seven years (1992-98). He was the offensive coordinator, quarterbacks and wide receivers coach from 1992-95, then switched to the defensive side of the ball, where he was the coordinator and linebackers coach from 1996-98.
Following four seasons as a graduate assistant at both Michigan State (1988-89) and Grand Valley State (1986-87), Denbrock’s first full-time coaching assignment came in 1990-91 as the tackles and tight ends coach with the Redbirds.
A 1986 graduate of Grand Valley State, Denbrock holds a bachelor’s degree in communications. As a member of Grand Valley State’s football team from 1982-85, Denbrock won the Phillip Shultz Award for attitude and commitment to the foot*ball program. Denbrock is married to the former Dianne Swanson.
