Three SLC guys on the first team defense!
Larry Hart Central Arkansas DE Sr 6-1 242
Jabara Williams Stephen F. Austin LB Jr 6-3 215
Tommy Connors Southeastern Louisiana SS Sr 6-1 205
Which will emerge as the SLC Def POTY? I think the winner of that honor finishes in the top three nationally. This league has some very special defensive players - some who did not even make the top three teams (SFA's Knicky and SHSU's Brown come to mind).

Wow, 6 players named for Weber State. Anyone want to wager we'll beat them?
Coulson missed on these Griz defensive players.:(xsmhxxsmhxxrolleyesx
Senior Safety Shawn Shillinger - 2008 stats
108 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 4 ints., 10 pass breakups, 2 fumble rec., 2 forced fumbles.
Senior Linebacker Shawn Lebsock - 2008 stats
102 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 4 pass breakups, 2 forced fumbles.
On Offense, why are these guys missing? :(xsmhxxsmhx
Guard Terran Hillsland, 3 year starter. 6'7" 323 lbs.
Tackle Levi Horn, 3 year starter, 6'7" 305 lbs.
When you are a starting O-Line for two years as a Soph. and Junior on teams that go 25-3 you should get some kind of recognition by your Senior year. Am I way off base????? xeyebrowx

Ah! I was wondering where the thread went? Why can't we have it in the main forum so everyone sees it?
On Knicky and Brown there are so many good DEs out there that both players would be considered in most years but fall victim to the unreal depth we have at the position this year.

The safety and linebacker have a slight beef for 3rd team but the tackles aren't as good as the guys listed. The OT position is very deep and talented and to be honest I think every single one of the guys Coulson named will play in the NFL while I would say Horn and Hillesland are 50/50 and low end free agent types at this point. Horn was eaten alive by Sidbury in the playoffs and I am sure that is what hurt his chances of being on this list.

That would be 7 guys, thank you very much.
We have the stars in Toone, Higgins, and Smith. The TE with tons of TD catches and total receptions, a Center from a program known for its OL more than Montana, and I believe Morris led the BSC in INTs, and Hadley would be the one I'd question, but he's still a solid player. Depth is more the issue on whether UM will win or not. You'll also notice no DL or LB from Weber, something that'll be needed to win in Missoula.
We're due for a win, so ttthhhhhppppttttt. :p:p:p

Horn was not playing across from Sidbury. Sidbury played all or almost all at left end. Horn plays left tackle. Sidbury went against Dyk (who may have gotten hurt) and then Russum, who was hurt the whole last half of the season (and didn't start or play much). Russum had postponed ankle surgery to finish his senior year. He couldn't push off his right foot. He had ankle surgery 3 or 4 days after the nat'l championship game. Sidbury was very good and hurt the Griz, but little or none of that was against Horn. After Quinn moved to right guard in the second half (following an injury), Sidbury didn't hurt the Griz as much.
In my view, Horn deserves to be on this team.

Well, both tackles didn't play well but I know where you are coming from. I know Dave and I know where he is coming from here. I have seen all of the tackles on his list and both of yours. I think you could argue Horn, Lane Freiwald, and even the SC State OT Culbreath. This is a very deep class and many of the guys on these teams and some that aren't are going to get shots in the NFL.

I am pleased to see Austin Stiechen on the first team and he is very deserving, but I am interested to see how his arrest will turn out. If what was stated in the story is true he may not even get to play this year.
I think Ruffin is very deserving of the 2nd team and Josh Mahoney is deserving of the 3rd team. Personally though I think OT Austin Howard for UNI should be on the list somewhere. I have a feeling he will end up on one of these lists at the end of the year.

No Matt Cohen - Lehigh LB ?
Agreed. Cohen was listed First Team on Phil Steele's preseason All-American at LB. The kid is a real playmaker and should be the Patriot League defensive POTY. These lists, like most, are just a mish-mash of one person's opinion based upon limited research. Realistically they cannot adequately compare players from around this huge country. Nothing more than fuel for bar room debates.

Another fudge.. Adrian Tracy deserves to be higher than third team
As I said before OT and DE are very deep positions this year. There are players not on this list that would have been on it last year or the year before. Tracy falling to 3rd team is due to the depth. He can't be ahead of Hart or Lane at this point. They are both outstanding players who have the numbers. Ruffin has to be at least 2nd team due to the fact that he had the numbers on a great team and he was the MVFC DEF POY so he has to be up there. I think Batten is the one name that most would say does not belong but those who say that have not seen him. He has a great motor, is very athletic, and I think his skills will put him in the NFL before Tracy or even Knicky.
I know people try to get on me about the NFL. Despite that I will always put a guy with 10 sacks and no potential at the next level over a guy with 2 sacks who is projected to be a NFL player down the line. The problem is that the numbers on all of these guys are close and we all know the the NFL brings in the best players. Now, if a LB is 5'11 210 or a DE is 5'11 245 I would not punish him by not honoring him for awards despite the fact he is too small for the NFL. However, knowing that the NFL takes the best players I am going to take the player with the tools to play in the NFL over the other guy when they have similar size, production, and the same type playmaker. Bottom line, I am saying that the best players play in the NFL and you should try and put the best players in the country on the All-America team and if a NFL prospect puts up All-America type numbers he has to go ahead of someone putting up good numbers but doesn't have the NFL potential. Batten is more athletic, has a better motor, has comparable stats, and is asked to do much more than Tracy, which puts him more deserving of 2nd team and I really think are many reasons he is the better NFL prospect.
Regardless of all these arguments this is the preseason and really I just congratulate those honored. I would tell those who feel snubbed in any way that the only teams that matter are the postseason ones and they have yet to be named!
I want to thank Dave Coulson for his hard work over the last few months because I know he was busy watching games and comparing these players.

Don't start this because everyone else will say Coulson is bias against every team that is well represented these days haha.
Do I have the list right? He loves App State, Villanova, and the SoCon overall but hates Montana and the Big Sky? LOL
Seriously though the only Nova player that I wouldn't have put on the list is Brannigan but I think you could argue that he should go on it. He and the UC Davis C are both worthy. Osunde, Ijalana, and Kukucka should be on a list that has 3 teams for sure.

I think that Brannigan is the Rock of the Villanova offensive line. He's not as talented as Ijalana, but He's going on his fourth year as a starter and when he was hurt last year, the running game was noticably worse. The Best move the coaching staff made offensively all year last year was putting Brannigan in at Center so they could have him and Bugli play at the same time (better than putting Whitney in at QB.) The Villanova offensive line could be something special this season even though we have to replace Bauta.

And when you look at the top teams you will usually find a very good OL. That is why Nova was so good last year and why I think you guys will be even better this year with 3 All-CAA caliber players at this point, including 2 All-America candidates!

Just confirmed that Horn (Montana left tackle) did NOT play against Sidbury at all in the championship game. Horn was involved in one sack (not involving Sidbury). The qb was sacked when he started to scramble, and Horn's man had new ankle to the qb. This type of sack is generally not considered to be caused by the blocker. I hope Sidbury's great game and 4 sacks against UM isn't tainting Horn.
