I am posting this here, not because its big news, but because maybe a year ago a member here asked me about how he was doing in the Sox system. Not sure if the person was a fan from his school or what, but if that person who asked about him is still around, Bates is up and will start tonight for Boston.
To make room for him on the 25 man roster, Jeff Bailey will be placed on the 15 day DL.
The Red Sox will also have to make a seperate move to make room on the 40 man roster for Bates. The options for that would be to move Matsuzaka to the 60 day DL, designate Gil Velazquez for assignment.
Any other move would risk losing a young player on waivers. Another option maybe to move Jed Lowrie to the 60 day DL if they are able to do it retroactively, he is slated to return after the All Star break but a retroactive move would leave him able to be activated on schedule.. Though Im not sure rules allow retroactive moves for the 60 day DL or if such a move could be made while the player is already on his rehab assignment.
They could of course release Julio Lugo and activate Jed Lowrie at the same time.
