7/1/66:
Rookie Pittsburgh left-hander Woodie Fryman allows a leadoff single to Mets second baseman Ron Hunt in the first inning but is perfect thereafter. Hunt is thrown out attempting to steal, Fryman faces the minimum of 27 batters, striking out eight with no walks, and the Pirates roll to a 12-0 victory. Willie Stargell, Donn Clendenon, Bill Mazeroski and Jose Pagan all homer for the Bucs. Known as “the Fleming Flame” during his amateur days in Kentucky, Fryman will pitch three more one-hitters in his career but never get a no-hitter.
