The Seattle-Portland heated soccer rivalry continues Wednesday when Sounders FC plays a U.S. Open Cup match in Portland against a familiar foe, the Timbers.

http://www.usopencup.com/imgs/History/usopencuplogo.gif

The mudslinging began in earnest early this month, when Sounders FC and the Portland Timbers of the lower-tier United Soccer Leagues First Division found themselves on a collision course for a third-round match in the U.S. Open Cup soccer tournament.

When Portland won its second-round match two weeks ago, the rivalry had returned — Portland versus Seattle on the pitch once again.

The Dynamo have continued to send players on loan to Austin. With the shortage due to the Gold Cup and injuries, I wonder how many of those guys will playing with the Dynamo or Austin...

The Revolution are without atleast 5 or 6 regulars anyways...who cares about this wastefull tournament. I have not been a big fan of all these extra games that they end up playing because it takes away from the MLS regular season...which is the most important one for a MLS franchise!!

GO REVS!

Does the US Open Cup winner get invited to the CONCACAF Champions League? If memory serves, they do, so this "useless tournament" is actually quite useful.

They do.

If a USL, PDL team or whatever else besides MLS were to win, it would end up taking a spot away from an MLS team while being a HUGE deal to that team. Can you imagine if Charleston Battery got to host Pachuca? Or Austin Aztek welcomed UNAM or Chivas Guadalajara?

Go Hammerheads!!!

Into the Quarters:

Harrisburg City Islanders (USL-2)
D.C. United (MLS)
Wilmington Hammerheads (USL-2)
Charleston Battery (USL-1)
Rochester Rhinos (USL-1)
Kansas City Wizards (MLS)

If Austin and Portland win tonight... that would leave only two MLS teams in the quarters. Man! The Seattle/Portland one is a Derby game - that should be great!

I thought Rochester won the US Open cup before - but it was before any CONCACAF international cups even existed. I actually was in Rochester once and saw a game there - it was pretty fun!

Can it be? Did the Dynamo actually win one for the MLS...? 11 corner kicks, geez! At one point, Dynamo had seven in 28 minutes.

Houston is 0-2 against Battery in Charleston, S.C.

Those previous two came in the third round. We'll see if the quarters can amount to anything different. FYI - the USL Live feed crashed last night, thanks to the Houston Dynamo fan base. Perhaps FC Dallas could learn a thing or two about that. :)

Seattle Sounders, D.C. United to meet in Open Cup Final
United will aim for back-to-back titles at RFK Stadium on September 2

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_f7d11wVxPe0/SmbPbZEL-TI/AAAAAAAAAag/AOxFgZgtPR0/s400/Picture+12.png

After a spirited and hard fought game with some injuries United move on to their second US Open Cup final at RFK Stadium in two years. United once again let a lower league side hang around all for most of the game, almost playing down to their opposition rather than putting them to the sword early until controversial referee Abbey Okulaja made one of his trademark calls and pointed to the spot due to a ball which may have been kicked into a Rochester player's arm. United went on the win the game 2-1.
