Yesterday the United States faced off against Brazil in the finals of the Confederations Cup. Two of the starting eleven players for the Americans, Clint Dempsey and Ricardo Clark, are former Furman Paladins.
Quite unique, I think, for two former teammates at a small college in South Carolina to be two of the eleven best players in the United States, regardless of the sport.

Which of course is more important than my comment, but I read and article online somewhere that said four of the starters went to upstate schools. I assumed two from Clemson plus the two I know from FU. xthumbsupx

Not sure I would go out and call Clark one of the best 11 players in the US. He only started because Bradley was red carded out of the match.

Maybe the backup GK is better then him... Maybe the 3rd and 4th forwards are better or the 5 and 6th defenders... Maybe guys that werent on the roster for the tourney are better... maybe theres injured guys who are better... U cant just say a guy is the 11th best or 12th best because he started a match, regardless of how big of a match it was.

The point was that it is impressive that two FU alums were on the team. Easy to read that into the post.
I am going to teach your NYC butt some mannersxlolx

Not true. Far from the truth, actually. Check the results here: http://www.ussoccer.com/common/stContent.jsp_16-2009MNTSRL.html
Of the five matches, Clark started in four, only missing the first Brazil match because of the red card he earned against Italy.
Bradley started all four matches he was eligible for as well.
In the second Brazil match, Benny Feilhaber was the replacement starter for Bradley.
Dempsey and Clark overlapped at Furman for two years, including the 2002 season when the team advanced to the Sweet 16 (lost to Stanford in 2OT (http://eweb.furman.edu/athletics/soccer_mens/seasons/2002/pressrel/stanford.htm) after leading 1-0). In that season, a car accident among soccer players left one teammate dead and another injured for the season. After the accident, Furman recorded 11 straight shutouts (over 1,100 minutes!!) before finally falling to Stanford. It was one of the more remarkable stories I've ever seen of a team bonding together after a tragedy like that.

Only 3 upstate guys. Bachelor #4 is a midlands guy, ex-South Carolina keeper Brad Guzan.
Well I guess to get technical, he's an Illinois guy, but he's not a former upstate college player.
Kudos to the purps though, I'm glad those two are no longer at Fuhman.

You are right, one USC, One Clemson and two Furman ( a rose between the thorns as always) :D

Hill played college soccer with American starters Clint Dempsey and Ricardo Clark at Furman. The Paladins often faced Clemson, which featured U.S. defender Oguchi Onyewu.
“It’s pretty spectacular to think that those three were running around,” Hill said Thursday of the trio that played at Furman’s Eugene Stone Stadium.
And don’t forget the U.S. game-changer in goal, ex-South Carolina keeper Brad Guzan who starred in the Americans’ 3-0 win against Egypt last Sunday to reach the tournament semifinals.
