6/19/99:
Brett Hull’s goal late in the third overtime gives the visiting Dallas Stars a 2-1 victory at Buffalo and the Stanley Cup championship even though his skate blade was clearly in the crease when he shot the puck past Sabres goalie Dominic Hasek, in violation of explicitly worded NHL rules. Unfortunately for Buffalo, pandemonium sets in immediately following Hull’s game-winning goal, the Stanley Cup is rolled out to center ice and Dallas is presented the hallowed chalice with no real inclination on the NHL’s part to review Hull’s goal or enforce its heretofore stringent interpretation of the “in-the-crease” rule.
