6/17/67:
Carrying top weight of 135 pounds and racing on grass with flat horseshoes, not spikes, 1966 Horse of the Year Buckpasser has his 15-race winning streak snapped when he finishes third in the Bowling Green Handicap at Aqueduct Racetrack in New York. Ridden by Braulio Baeza, Buckpasser, the pride of the Ogden Phipps stable, never really makes a run at the leader, Poker, whose weight was set at 112 pounds in the handicap race. Buckpasser’s flat-bottomed shoes were a form of training for an upcoming race he was scheduled to run in France, where spiked (or caulked) shoes are prohibited. Alas, after losing this outing, his trip abroad will be canceled.
