I know it's still early in the season, but after a 4 for 4 evening, Mauer's average is .429 with 13 HR's and 41 RBI. Can the 2 time batting champion be the next .400 hitter this year? .400 for a season has happened 35 times in Major League baseball, the last being Ted Williams in 1941, when he hit .406. In 1980 George Brett was above .400 until September 19th, and ended with a .390 average.

Anything can happen, but I'd guess that he won't get it.

He might stand a chance as a DH, but it will never happen as a catcher.

Excellent point. The wear and tear on a catcher will take a toll.

I hope he carries a .400 + average well into the season if, for no other reason, then to take some press time away from Brett Favre. :)

that's impossible, E$PN has devoted segments to Favre. I hope he makes a good run at .400, he should have been a Nole.

Also better than hearing about steroids all year.

I love Mauer, and I hope he does it, but he's only a month and a half into his season. I'll wait until at least August before I start getting excited about the possibility of a .400 season.

Wasn't Tony Gwynn REALLY close to it the year the strike ended things early? I want to say .395-ish?
