There is no doubt about this. This is a terrible job. Bobby Wallace deserved better.

Well, I'm not sure what's worse, being a defensive coordinator at UVA or a head coach at Temple. I might've kept my job...

That is 3 UVA assistants getting head coaching jobs in the last 3 days. Either Al Groh has a great staff or they all hate him & want to leave.

Personally I would say the former. Assistants don't get offered jobs unless people see that they are doing a good job. Delaware lost a slew of assistants in the '04-'05 off season. They were for the most part Delaware grads. I know they weren't unhappy at UD. They just offered an opportunity to advance. I'm happy for them and there is no problem with there decision.

Golden is a great guy (and coach) but I can't for the life of me figure out why in the world he would go to Temple. That's not a good job for anybody with any promise. It's a place to go to die as a coach. I guess people that go there are ones that reallllly believe in themselves and think they are THE key to turning that program around. Bad news for Golden. Jehovah aint turning that program around.
UVA is a really nice place and they have built a incredible fan base. Groh is not the most beloved guy right now, but he has packed the stadium for several years now, but he does need to get some more results to go along with his great recruiting. They used to average 30-40K for games. They expanded the stadium and brought Groh in and this year they sold out every game (over 60,000). A fantastic atmosphere for a game. Good luck to Golden, but I won't hold my breath on the Owls.

It's no contest blur. Groh keeps bringing in stud recruits for Golden. Temple can't bring in anything, including fans.

Looks like Virginia has become a nice stepping stone school. They will never amount to anything and will always be upstaged by Virginia Tech.
Golden won't be successful at Temple unless he gets the support that Bobby Wallace never got. I hate to see an eastern school look so pitiful on the football field.

 Some rather strong words there Triber. You probably would have made a similar comment about UVA never being a decent program before Welsh came along. And again that they would never be a program that averages over 60,000 fans per game. I'll be the first to admit that VT is certainly in a better place now, but that can change very quickly. As more and more UVA players head to, and are successful in, the NFL, UVA/VT will become and even better rivalry.
Last year UVA had 7 players drafted, the most they've ever had. VT had 3. UVA has a bunch that will get drafted this year too. That will catch the eyes of recruits quickly.

Why would anybody want to coach at Temple
As the old saying goes, "When oppurtunity knocks..."
If you noticed, few former head coaches were on Temple's final list. They had to "promote' an assistant. For many coaches, the chance to be a head coach might not come around again. Yes, it's a difficult job, but for a lot of guys, it's a risk worth taking.
I've seen something similar in my career. When I started right out of college, the boss kept asking one of my co-workers if she was willing to work on this project or that project. Her answers were always a variant of "Well, that's not really the type of work I like to do." After about 8 or 9 months of this, they stopped asking her and gave her nothing but crap work. The perception being, she was never going to "step-up" and attempt a challange. I can see a parallell with football coaches here.

Good point. Opportunities come in all shapes, sizes and tasks. You can customize yourself right out of a job if you're not willing to take some risks. I also remember an old adage that said, 'Too many people are unwilling to let Opportunity in the door because he's dressed in overalls and looks like work.'
Anyone who takes on Temple will have on hell of a challenge, but consider the future for the person who is able to begin a turnaround. Once getting into the MAC, they could possibly be up to a .500 team in a few years with some decent recruiting. Wouldn't hold my breath, but this is a challenge.

Except they use that to try and show they are any good. I'll be first to admit that UVA is mediocre at best.

Well, so long as Temple is upfront with Golden or any candidate about the support he'll get and what he will have to deal with, then he can certainly decide whether it's an opportunity or a dead end...

Temple has nowhere to go but up. When they become full fledged members of the MAC, their schedule will be more manageable.

My parents lived in Florence, AL when Bobby Wallace was coach at UNA. Wallace won 3 straight National Tittles. His three choices for jobs were: Temple, Mississippi State, or stay at UNA. Yes, that Mississippi State job does not sound great, but heck go there instead of Temple. Or he could have stayed at UNA and won more NCs and then he could have got more publicity.

I can't wait for Temple to start playing Buffalo every year.
