The Wrong Turn

Onetime Detroit Lions quarterback JEFF KOMLO was a success in sports, business and love. So why did he die alone, on the run, thousands of miles from home?

L. JON WERTHEIM

When he went on the lam, his old college teammates passed around a cellphone number and left him encouraging messages. Sometimes the voice mailbox was full, other times it was receiving. The players debated whether the messages were getting to him or it was an FBI trap. Their venerated coach called the number and left a message urging his old quarterback to turn himself in, take his punishment and come out of it a better man. "Sad to say," the coach laments, "I never heard back."...

What a great article. So many questions, so few answers. Unfortunately Komlo just seems to be the ultimate con man, simply building his cons until one day the lies got too big to deal with.

It's amazing how the skills that made him a successful QB at Delaware were eventually put to evil use. You've got to think those daughters have the full story somewhere - maybe someday they'll divulge the whole story - but for now, the best thing for them (and his former wives) is to probably the whole sorry affair behind them and get on with their lives :(

Just a sad story of a guy who could have done a lot of good things and just ended up doing a lot of bad things, and hurting a lot of people along the way to his own demise. What a waste and what a shame.

Very sad. Komlo had a lot of talent at UD and in the pros. He clearly had great success. Hard to say what makes a person go in the wrong direction.

This was an interesting read, and a sad story.
