SWAC Likely to Move Back to Nine-Game Conference Schedule

Three summers ago, the athletic directors of all 10 Southwestern Athletic Conference schools agreed to move to a seven-game conference football schedule, rather than the nine-game schedule that had previously been used.

The thinking was the creation of more nonconference openings would allow SWAC schools, which compete in the Football Championship Subdivision, to schedule games with schools from the Football Bowl Subdivision, games which usually come with a sizable payout.

Talk about one giant leap backwards...

The SWAC weak links are having problems scheduling, some of them at their own fault due to backing out of home-and-home agreements.

I am sure that if the "mandate" returns - the league will still retain the "Rematch Bowl" which was a classic game pitting two teams that had already played each other during the season.

Our tough economic times lead to problems - but you'd think, since all FBS schools are looking for guaranteed wins (sans a select few), that the SWAC schools would be at their top of their list.

Instead, you have at least one SWAC school (UAPB) traveling to play a Div II school...

The good thing is the SWAC fans thus far on TSPN realize this is a step backwards...

The Golden Lions lone victory prior to the start of conference play was a 64-62 win over Southern Methodist on Dec. 15, the only win by a SWAC school over a Division I nonconference opponent.

UAPB made around $70,000 for each of those games, but Perkins said only nine such games are on the 2009-2010 schedule and in following years that number will continue to decrease.

He added that, though not yet official, a cap could be put on such games in the future.

why is Savannah St red? Horrible move, couldn't stand the mandate before and would hate it even more if they brought it back. xnonono2x

Just copied what was posted - Savannah St is obviously Div I.

The UAPB AD talks about capping guarantee games in men's hoops too. They have nine such games this year. xnonono2x

"Some schools really had problems scheduling 10 ballgames," Braddy said. "The money games, for some of the schools just didn't come forward ... including us."

What Alcorn did in terms of scheduling and recruiting this year under all the bullshat that went on is unreal.
My hat is off to them...............(Even though I hate them INJUNS). xlolx

JSU had a chance to play Eastern Michigan also but the payout and terms was not in our favor.
They wanted the Sonic Boom to come also but those expenses would come out of the payout.
Didn't make any since to go all that way just to break even.
We don't need a FBS game so bad that we will allow ourselves to be "PIMPED" just to fill their stadium.

Braddy said the problem for JSU is that opponents want the Sonic Boom to perform, but the cost eats into the would-be profits from scheduling the game. He used an opportunity with Eastern Michigan as an example, saying it offered $375,000 but demanded the band.

"It really didn't make sense," Braddy said. "We need to clear $300,000 after expenses."

It seems the "atmosphere" that a SWAC team brings is more important than the football product when it comes to these low to mid-FBS squads.

Unfortunately, the "scenery" with the band is costing the football team FBS payouts. This could explain why the FBS pay dates are not as regular an occurrence in the SWAC.

Like I said.
We don't get pimped just because some FBS school want's us to fill their stadium.
We getting Eastern Michigan money to travel 150 miles to Mississippi State.
The band is going and it's not costing us a cent.

Besides.
When it comes to the game, all FCS schools are looked at the same by these mega football factories.
A easy win in what amount's to a scrimmage for them.
What Appy State did against Michigan is the 15 year exception to the rule.
Don't act like school's like Georgia, LSU, Alabama, Florida and yes MICHIGAN respect any of us and that includes teams not in the SWAC.

These school's just know that HBCU bands and especially the upper teir bands can add ticket's to their gameday that they would not get on any other game.
We get offers but we are not going to accept any offer just because it's an FBS school.

EASTERN MICHIGAN for example.

JSU can schedule a game with a school like FAMU, BCC, SCSU in Memorial and put more butt's in those seat's than 90% OF THE MID-MAJOR'S YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT playing.
And all that money would go to us.

We gonna make more money than we getting from Mississippi State and would have got from Eastern Michigan off the concession, parking, and 20% ticket sales deal when SU comes here on October 3 for a "home game".xlolx
Then Homecomming at 100%, and then the CCC with Alcorn.

Why is Rutgers (Big East) stipulations to bring the Ocean with our football team? I'd say they are no longer low to mid in terms of FBS squads.

Is TSU having to pay for the band within the payout? Or is there a separate fee that the school is paying?

Rutgers is better than Arkansas State, 3rd Coast. This game could get uglier than that debacle in Jonesboro, Ark. And let us remember that the Red Wolves were running the ball with the third and fourth teamers and still moving the ball...

But it does not matter , right? TSU is getting paid! Perhaps they can use the payout on... xwhistlex
