6/5/71:
Canonero II’s bid for a Triple Crown goes by the boards as the Venezuelan colt finishes fourth behind 31-1 shot Pass Catcher in the Belmont Stakes. Ridden by Walter Blum, Pass Catcher wins by nearly a length over Jim French, with Bold Reason finishing third. Canonero’s normal workout schedule of brisk sprints had been interrupted this week by a foot infection, and many railbirds speculated that his level of endurance just wouldn’t be up to the task of the mile-and-a-half Belmont distance. They were right.
