The Star later learned JSU was told it would not be subject to scholarship sanctions that would prevent the football team from playing big-money guarantee games against Bowl Subdivision programs or penalties that would affect the entire athletic department if the football program missed the mark again.
Translation: The NCAA said that if Jacksonville State takes Perrilloux's senior year and makes it into an exhibition season, they'll magically keep scholarships around and take historic penalties off the table for future years. I find this absolutely remarkable - if true - for two reasons:
1) This means that they know somehow that JSU's APR next year will be above the 900 threshold - or will ignore those numbers. If they're assuming the APR will be good next year, why? If they're doing it because they've "shown good APR progress", why not just exempt them from all penalties right now, just like they did with Indiana?
2) This means that the NCAA has been negotiating with JSU about their APR numbers no matter what they end up being next year. This makes a complete mockery that this the APR all about numbers and academic performance - it's all about backroom deals and "being so mad at Indiana, they're going to put Jacksonville State on probation one year."
