These cuts are not as much as some of the other conferences around the country, but our league is an 100% bus league. Our schools bus from one school to the next, with no flights involved. Several of the trips are even day-trips and are not long enough to warrant hotel nights.
Anyhow, here are the measures...
1) Consolidation of administrative meetings
2) Freezes in officiating fees in most sports
3) Use of conference calls instead of in-person meetings for all coaches’ committees.
4) Distribution of championship mementos only to student-athletes and other student personnel
5) Requiring the track and field coaches to establish championship qualifying standards or entrant limitations effective in 2009-10.
6) Continuing to study the implementation of travel squad limitations in future regular-season travel.
The release also said, "administrators decided not to reduce the number of teams that currently qualify for conference championships".
The schools are obviously taking measures into their own hands at the local level. I am hopeful that we will see more out of conference regional rivalries formed across all sports - from football to basketball to soccer to baseball - as the schools are forced to play more localized opponents to limit costs.
