To avoid further hijacking of a thread about Georgia Southern's 1989 National Championship and since we were discussing best teams for FU, We might as well see if there is any interest in people rating their best teams.
1988 was Furman's national championship year but I have always thought the best team was the year after. 1988 is hard to argue since we won it al, but the team survived on defense. The offense was adequate enough to win but mainly because the defense rarely failed us.
My rankings for Furman
1989. 12-2-0 average points scored 30.71, points given up 13.5
Losses Clemson 0-30 and Stephen F Austin in the semi's.
It snowed during the SFA game and Furman was without their starting QB. Spotted SFA 21 points on early turnovers and still came back and missed the tying two point conversion near the end of the game. The closest games other than the losses were 10 point wins over SC STate and UT Chatt. The team had everything, offense and defense.
1985 12-2-0 runner up losing to GSU in the Champ game in what some think is the best NC game ever played. or at least the most exciting.
Lost to GSU and Newberryxeekx Early season loss without starting QB Bobby Lamb. Average 37 PPG , gave up 16. and Beat NC State. 42-20
1988. The National Champ year. 13-2-0 lost to Clemson 3-23 and to Marshall 10-24. Returned to Huntington and won 13-9 in the quarterfinals. Beat GSU in the finals. Average points per game 24. Points given up 10.
Oh yeah, FU beat Delaware 21-7:D
2001. This is part of my lost years when I travelled on business so much I barely saw Greenville so my knowledge of the team is a little more limited but I did get to see Ivory carry the ball more than a few timesxthumbsupx 12-3-0. Lost to Wyoming 14-21, to Georgia Southern 10-20 and to Montana in the NC game 6-13 ( a game that Ivory was limited due to injury). Returned to Statesboro for the the semis and handed them their first ever playoff loss in Statesboro. PPG 32 Points allowed 15.
2004 - Ingle Years - 10-3 PPG 35, points allowed 17, lost to Pittsburgh38-41 in OT ( I do believe Pittsburgh won the Big East that year) ASU 29-30 where Wiliams pass something like 42-44 (our backfield was still wounded from the Pitt game but Williams was impressive to watch) and James Madison in the quarters13-14.
2005- This is the year alot of people mention as one of FU's best teams but I think it was easily below the others mentioned. Lost to ASU in the semis on the infamous slip and fall by Ingle missing the go ahead touchdown. 11-3 PPG 35 points allowed 27xeekx One of the reasons this team is not higher on the list. This team had to score a lot of points because everyone else was going to score on us. Lost to Western Carolina ( Another reason that the team is rated lower:p) Georgia Southern and ASU in the semi's after beating ASU in the regular season.
OK I have been quiet for awhile so I thought I would get all my chatting out of the way in one post. :D

1996 and 1997 D2 national championship teams. We were darn good and well coached by Joe Glenn. I don't think many 1AA teams would have beat us. We were also very good in 2002 (made it to the d2 semi's) which was the year I graduated from UNC.

Most GSU fans would agree on the 1999 team. That was the best offense in the history of the FCS, period. You can talk about NFL prospects on the '96 Marshall team but there's a difference between talent and implementation thereof. You just can't beat over 500 yards of offense per game, over 50 points per game, 41 points on a BCS team that barely gave up 20 points per game, and records for most points scored in both a playoff and a championship game. We also had three NFL prospects in the secondary and two more on the DL that would get on at least one All-America team.

My senior year. Not that I'm biased or anything. :D
In 1993, an 8-2 Towson State amassed 2,969 yards rushing and 1,934 yards passing for a season game average of 490.3 yards per game. Tony Vinson ran for four 300 yard games and finished with 2,016yards and 23 TDs. In 240 passing attempts, me and my boys gave up only 5 sacks. We beat CCSU, Del State, Chuck South, UConn, Buffalo, Bucknell and Morgan State. We lost to ,evenualy undefeated, Howard with zero time on the clock. Got our a$$es handed to us by Uncle Buck's Hofstra in a monsoon. We did however beat then 14th ranked Delaware in November. Delaware finsihed 7-2 in Division I games and made the playoffs, compared to our 8-2, and I've been bitter ever since. :o

Yep, I'd agree on '99, and all of our championship teams had to have been pretty good, but there's also the '98 team; averaged more than 43 points per game and were 14-1, losing only to UMass in the championship. Really don't mean to take anything away from UMass, and I acknowledge that they had something to do with some of them, but 7 turnovers by us really was the story of that game.

For Northeastern
1963: 8-1
Undefeated regular season (237-42 for the season score, three shutouts), lost to East Carolina in the Eastern Bowl
2002: 10-3
Won the A-10, made the NCAA tournament
Those are two that stick out to me...

Colgate FB dates to 1890, and I am sure there will be some other suggestions, but these six seasons are arguably the best:
1925: 7-0-2
1932: 9-0-0 (unscored upon, voted eastern champion over Pitt, which was routed in the Rose Bowl we should have played in)
1966: 8-1-1
1977: 10-1-0 (only loss to Delaware, Third in Division I-A Lambert Poll)
1982: 8-4-0 (NCAA I-AA Quarterfinalist - Lost to Delaware in QF)
2003: 15-1-0 (NCAA I-AA Finalist - lost to Delaware in Final)

This is a tough one. I'll give it a shot. For Harvard:
2004: Harvard goes 10-0 and outscores opponents 339-134. It can win close ones (one-point squeakers over Brown and Columbia) as well as laughers. Ryan Fiztpatrick and Clifton Dawson lead the way.
2001: Harvard goes 9-0 in the "9/11 season," with the Holy Cross game cancelled. Neil Rose at QB and Carl Morris at WR were the guts of this team.
1997: This 9-1 team was undefeated in league play, losing only to Bucknell early. Chris Menick was the workhorse RB.
2007: Chris Pizzotti led this 8-2 team to an undefeated 7-0 Ivy mark, capped by its 37-6 win over then-undefeated Yale.
2008: Pizzotti gets a "repeat," with a 9-1 overall mark and 6-1 in the league. Some sloppy play in the Brown game (ballhandling and special teams) cost this impressive team an undefeated season.
(Honorable mention) 1975: Harvard gets its first non-shared Ivy title in the modern era with a 10-7 win over Yale.

For McNeese, I think you would need to separate the Division I (prior to formation of Div I-AA) years from the Division I-AA or FCS years.
From the Division I years:
1976 (10-2) Southland and Independence Bowl champs
1979 (11-1) Southland champs - lost to Syracuse in Indy Bowl
1980 (10-2) Southland champs - lost to Southern Miss in Indy Bowl
From the Division I-AA/FCS years:
1995 (13-1) lost to Marshall in semis
1997 ((13-2) lost to Youngstown in NC game
2002 (13-2) lost to W. Kentucky in NC game
2007 (11-1) lost in 1st round to E. Washington but had sweeeet 38-17 win over hated rival ULL

I'll only rate the best teams that I witnessed, therefore nothing earlier than 1977-78.
1A. 1993 and 1B. 2003 I rate those teams together because to me they were the most special teams Southern had in my lifetime. The 1993 team was special because it was Pete Richardson's first team there and they won the SWAC for the first time since 1975. That team was built on defense and a running attack. Although they still couldn't get over that Nicholls hump. xnonono2x The 2003 team was based on offense and along with Bruce Eugene and Grambling, provided one of the most exciting Bayou Classics ever. Those two teams were led by great leaders at the QB position.
3. 1995 This was another high scoring team that hit it's stride late in the season. They played two great games in Atlanta against FAMU.
4. 1999 Probably the best defensive team I witnessed at Southern, if not for a blasting from FAMU, I would rate this team higher. They defeated a talented Jackson State team twice.
5. 1997 Another team that had an undefeated season derailed at FAMU.

I'll go against the grain for probably most App fans and say that the 2005 National Championship team was the best. I should qualify that by saying when Richie Williams was 100%. The only losses were at Kansas, at LSU and a close loss at Furman. The offense was comparable to that of the next two years, but the defense was better.
After that I'll go with 2006 and then 2007.
In 2000 we played road warriors and beat Troy and Western Kentucky away from home before losing a heartbreaker to Montana in overtime in the semis.
In 1995 we were undefeated in the regular season, but lost in the second round of the playoffs.
In 1987 we ended Georgia Southern's first run of championships in the quarterfinals, but lost at home to Marshall in the semis. That sucked.
And lets not forget the 1937 squad coached by Kidd Brewer. They were unbeaten and unscored on in the regular season. Outscored opponents 206-0. Then they lost a postseason game to Southern Miss, 7-0.

Most GSU fans will pick either the 1989 or 1999 teams but further consideration should be given to the 1986 squad that was 13-2 with losses on the road to 1-A Florida and 1-A East Carolina (GSC got absolutely hosed by the officials at ECU and only lost by 3). That 1986 group averaged over 50 ppg in the playoffs and just destroyed Ark St in the finals. That group played a brutal schedule too.
IMO Furman's teams in 2001 and 2004 were both better than their 2005 squad.
As for App, I agree that the 2005 team was the best of the three-peat because of the defense. Their only losses that year, like the 1986 GSU squad, was to 1-A's on the road.

I'd have to put the 2006 App team just above the 2005 App team. Went 14-1 with the only loss to NC State 23-10 and that game had Trey Elder start while only 75% off surgery, and we still forced 4 turnovers, but an INT on the goal line hurt badly.
2005 had a better defense and 2007 had a better offense, but 2006 was the most balanced team. Was never ranked lower than #2 the entire season and the only reason App was #2 was because UNH beating Northwestern in September.
Can't ignore the 1995 team that went undefeated in the regular season and the 1937 team that went unscored on in the regular season.
And with all that said, I believe this year's App team has the potential to be the best one yet.

While I love Richie I would agree that the 2006 team was the best team in ASU history. The way that team came together at the end of the year and the way they improved each week was amazing. We lost a close came to furman in 05 and in 06 beat them 40-7. We just blew teams out that year. The only close games were Wofford and GSU who we beat by 7 each.
We walked through the playoffs in a way that still blows me away.
45-28
38-17
49-24
The NC was a better game but we still won by more than 10. 28-17
That loss to NC State the fist week of the season is still a huge sore spot for me ranking right up there with the loss to GSU in 2007 at home. I still maintain to this day that if we had played NC State 4-6 weeks later we would have won by 3+ touchdowns.
The defense also held teams to 10 points or less 6 times including one shutout, not to mention by the end of many games that season the starters were out of the game.
Armanti was the first freshmen qb to run for 1k and pass for 2k in a season and he didn't even start the first 3 games.
In my book the 2006 team is the best team App has ever seen.
Now on paper the 09 team looks to be pretty strong as well.

Echoing what others have said about the 1937 and 1995 teams, of the three ASU national championship teams I would say 2006 was the best. It's definitely my favorite with a balanced offense led by AE and Kevin Richardson, while still having Marques Murrell roaming on the defensive side.
Offense: 35.2 points per game (30.3 in 2005, 42.7 in 2007)
Defense: 14.9 points per game (18.8 in 2005, 26.7 in 2007)
Averaged 417 yards of offense a game while allowing 276.
Lost to a terrible NC State team in the first game of the season and pretty much rolled through 2006 (the Wofford, GSU and UMass games being the toughest) to finish 14-1.
NC State 10-23
JMU 21-10

Villanova in the FCS Era
1997: Led by Payton Award Winner Brian Finneran, Quarterback Chris Boden and a shifty little true freshman Running Back by the name of Westbrook Villanova had an undefeated regular season and finished the regular season ranked #1 in the nation. Unfortunately the season ended in heartbreak when they lost in the second round of the playoffs to eventual national champion Youngstown State. For Villanova Football fans, this is the great season that got away.
2002: Led By Diminutive Quarterback and Payton Award Runner Up (to Tony Romo I might add) Brett Gordon, The Wildcats were carried into the playoffs and ended up making it to the national semifinal where they were beaten (some say that they were jobbed) by McNeese State.

Hey darell, I see you're quite proud of those wins against the Bison, as much so as your lone NC. xthumbsupx

Lets just say playing a monster team like NDSU in the 80's...we needed a new decade to look forward too. You guys along with UNC and USD were the kings of the NCC in the 80's and 90's. We were at the bottom in the 80's and it took a couple decades to de-throne you. I hope if and when UND joins the Summit the battle of the XD's and SU's will continue for the title.xthumbsupx

now we know why Delaware is no longer on the Colgate schedule.. :p
No regrets about '03 - that UD team was much better, IMO one of the top I-AA/FCS squads ever.
1982 was a close playoff loss - both teams were damned good.
1977, on the other hand, was utter heartbreak. xbawlingx
We also lost to UD's National Championship team in 1979 in a close one in Hamilton.
Wish we would play again!

No we didn't, but IMO the conference wasn't as strong in 2006 as in 2005. And in 2005, App was able to pretty much dominate Georgia Southern and Wofford. Both teams gave us a lot harder time the next year.
You're overlooking the fact that Jayson Foster wasn't able to run in that game because of a problem with his foot. GSU's backup quarterback had never played in the game and wasn't that great to begin with.
I agree with those that would say App's 2007 was the best of the championship teams. You lost Muerrel (sp?) and Wiggins from the defense from the previous year but Edwards improved and you still had your best offensive weapons. Also, 2007 was (top-to-bottom) the strongest SoCon I have ever seen. If Elon and The Citadel had replaced their FBS losses with FCS wins (they played the FBS teams well, but still lost) and GSU defense had not crumbled for the Colorado State game, we would have had 5 SoCon teams with 7 DI wins a 8 wins overall. Even Chatty gave Arkansas a fit that year even though they had a terrible SoCon record.

As a player Im a little biased but our 88 team that lost to Furman was very good. We lost to FSU in the 4th quarter after leading 10-7 in the 4th. We lost to Furman fumbling the ball on the 3 yrd line going in for the win. I will say that they played better than we did that game. We had just learned that Erk had been offered the job at UGA and that had us concerned going into the game.
Our 89 team 15-0 was very good in all areas. The 99 team may have been the better offense but I think we had the better team overall.
Many think that Furman had the better team in 85 and that we had the better team in 88.

In my opinion, Montana's 1995 and 1996 teams, even though A) the 1996 team didn't win it all, and was completely dismantled by Randy Moss, and B) the 2001 team did win it all.
The aerial attack from those teams was incredible. We slaughtered a BCS team (though I personally don't actually recall that game), and we had two amazing playoff runs in Washington-Grizzly where we outscored our opponents 325-38. Those two seasons are probably the biggest reason why the Griz have the hardcore following throughout the state that they do now.
Plus that Stephen F. Austin game was not only the coldest f'ing game I've ever been to, but one of the most memorable as well.

For Northeastern
1963: 8-1
Undefeated regular season (237-42 for the season score, three shutouts), lost to East Carolina in the Eastern Bowl
2002: 10-3
Won the A-10, made the NCAA tournament
Those are two that stick out to me...
I think we would have won the Eastern Bowl against ECU but our best player (Bob Cappadona) transferred from Notre Dame and there was some weird rule about him playing in a Bowl game because he transferred, so he was ineligible.
http://www.gonu.com/hall/rcappadona.html
He played for the Pats and the Bills in the AFL.

Just off the top of my head for Lehigh
1977 D2 National Champs 12-2, outscored their opponents 466-191 during the season, beat Jacksonville St. 33-0 in title game
1979 1AA National Runner-up 10-3, only gave up 118 points all season, steamrolled by EKU in the title game.
1991 9-2 Lost two games by a total of 2 points, including one to #1 Holy Cross. Took out William & Mary, Uconn and a very good Dartmouth team. Easily Lehigh's best team during the playoff band years.
1998 12-1 Quaterfinalist. Had 4 shots from the 10 to take out eventaul champ UMASS in Amherst and fell short.
2000 12-1 Quaterfinalist, ran Western Illinois off the field before running into a darn good Delaware team in Newark. Smoked a 7-4 Wofford team in Spartansburg to start the season. The defense was flat out nasty. Towson scored 21 points on them which was the most they gave up during the regular season.

Since I was born in the 80's, I will say that the1998 and 1999 squads were the best(95, 96, and 97 were strong too)...the late 90's were good to FAMU...LOL
1998 we had the top ranked offense in I-AA led by QB Pat Bonner(almost 4,000 yards passing and about 38 TD's) and those dangerous RAC Boys, Jacquay Nunnally, Tariq Quiyam, Cainon Lamb, Demetrius Bendross, and Cedric Mitchell(I believe I got that right). Anyways, after losing to Hampton 21-14 to open the season, we went on to win 11 in a row, INCLUDING a playoff victory against Troy State. We ended up losing 24-21 to Western Illinois in the 2nd round...the defense wasn't a pushover either.
1999 we had another STRONG offensive season. This time we were led by QB JaJuan Seider who again had the RAC Boys as targets. The thing about JaJuan Seider was that he could run...and he would RUN YOU OVER. We actually ended the season 8-3 and got into the playoffs with At Large Bid(North Carolina A&T won the MEAC). However we beat Appalachian State 44-29 in the 1st round, beat Troy State 17-10 in the 2nd round, and lost a 2 touchdown 4th quarter lead at Youngstown State to lose 27-24 in the semifinals.
1998
Hampton 14-21 L
Norfolk State 84-14 W
Jackson State 45-7 W
Tennessee State 31-23 W
Delaware State 56-21 W
NCA&T 51-12 W
Howard 69-41 W
Morgan State 59-32 W
Southern 50-48 W
SCSU 37-14 W
BCC 50-14 W
Playoffs
Troy State 27-17 W
WIU 21-24 L
1999
Miami 3-57 L
Norfolk State 56-7 W
Tennessee State 25-42 L
SCSU 76-17 W
Morgan State 66-10 W
Howard 40-34 W
Hampton 41-6 W
Delaware State 48-19 W
Southern 65-18 W
NCA&T 15-30 L
BCC 63-14 W
Playoffs
Appalachian State 44-29 W
Troy State 17-10 W
Youngstown State 24-27 L
Again I wasn't around in the 40's, 50's, 60s, and 70's so I didn't list them...THOSE teams were AWESOME!!!

However we beat Appalachian State 44-29 in the 1st round
Playoffs
Appalachian State 44-29 W
It can be argued that game triggered a series of events that led to Appalachian's 3-peat.
But in any event, that was a very good team. An FAMU/Ga Southern championship would have set offensive records.

All time, the top five would include undefeated teams in 1938 and 1939, the Orange Bowl team of 1940, the 1925 team which allowed only two touchdowns all season, and the 1927 team which posted six shutouts in nine games.
Closer to the modern era, th 1998 and 1999 teams each finished 9-2, which got Georgetown in the mix as far as the PL was concerned.

Good points, but I don't think anyone made the argument for the 2007 team. 2006 seems to be the team most App fans think was our best. I respectfully disagree.

Many think that Furman had the better team in 85 and that we had the better team in 88.
I think there is validity in that statement. The 85 game was a stunning (and in my case heartbreaking) comeback. I know the entire team plays, but Hamm was unstoppable in the second half after FU stopped the option in the first. Even in the second half Hamm was always under pressure but always made the cut that freed him and or found the receiver.
The thing that makes FUs 88 team so difficult to measure is that the offense was far from wonderful. But the defense was perhaps FU's best ever.
You certainly played on some great GSU teams. xthumbsupx

1988 - Before my time but this team ended with a 10-3 record. I-AA playoffs where they were sent to Boise St. in the 1st round and beat BSU 22-13 and then fell in the 2nd round to Idaho 30-38. Scott Stoker was the QB on this team. He would later be H.C. at NSU from 2002-2008.
1998 - Beat FBS poser UL-L. Played Missouri, who was top 25 that year, within 2 TDs and held them to their lowest offensive production of the year, beat a top 10 McNeese team. Advanced to the I-AA playoffs and beat Illinois St, Appalachian State and lost to eventual I-AA Champion and road warriors UMass...a game we were winning at halftime.
2001 - IMO, one of our better teams though it didn't end up as nice as '98. We had a hell of a passing game with Craig Nall but were two one dimensional because our running game was non-existent. Beat TCU by a fieldgoal in OT, a week after they lost to Nebraska by 1 TD. Had a so-so SLC season but managed to receive an at-large bid to the playoffs. This was our very first trip to Montana, who would be the eventual I-AA champion. Out of all of the playoffs games we were the only one to even come close to beating UM. We had a halftime lead but the 2nd half consistented of MANY ticky-tacky penalties and a couple that were just plain silly. Including the dagger to the heart where our receivers forward progress was clearly stopped yet the referee let the play continue to drag on and the Montana D was able to strip the ball and help it into the endzone for the game deciding score.

I've been watching GSU football since 1984, this is how I'd rank each year’s edition ....
1989 = Solid in all aspects (offense, defense, special teams) - National Champs
1999 = Offensive juggernaut, 747 points scored on the season - National Champs
1986 = Only 2 losses to Florida and ECU ... brutal schedule - National Champs
1990 = Fought back from a 1-3 start, reeled off 11 straight wins to finish - National Champs
1985 = Improbable comeback in title game, new kids on the block - National Champs
1988 = Solid in all aspects, just a fumble away at the end - Championship Runnerups
2000 = Solid on offense, timely play on defense - National Champs
2001 = Best defensive unit IMO ever @ GSU - Lost in I-AA Semis
1998 = Great offensive unit, very sub-par defensive unit - Championship Runnerups
2004 = Talented team lacking week-to-week consistency - Lost in 1st round
2002 = Young team which grew up late, just not in time - Lost in I-AA Semis
1997 = Excellent defensive unit, solid offense - Lost to UD in Delaware in the second round
1987 = Nicely balanced team with a new QB – Lost in second round @ Appalachian St.
1993 = Good team, lost to YSU in the playoffs in the second round @ Youngstown
1995 = Upset #1 Troy State in round one, got smoked in Montana the next week
2005 = Pretty good on offense, weak on defense - Lost in 1st round
1984 = First year in I-AA ball, close to playoffs
2007 = Close games kept us out of the playoffs ... pretty decent team
2008 = Competitive but extremely young team
2003 = 7 and 4 season, couldn't get any momentum, started slow
1991 = 7 and 4 on the year, 3 games lost on a total of 14 points - No playoffs
1992 = 7 and 4 again, pretty poor season, lost to D2 Jacksonville State on Homecoming
1994 = Thumped by Miami, lost at home to D2 West Georgia
1996 = First losing season since restarting football in 1982
2006 = VanGorder era – nuff said

i've had this discussion with a lot of other JMU fans... personally, and i haven't been a season ticket holder for TOO long.... 2008 was the best JMU team i've seen. offensively they were unstoppable for most of the year, and until our star senior LB went out for the season during the Richmond game (halfway through the year), they were even pretty stingy on D. doesn't always work out though. my opinion is 2008 was our best year... that i've seen. 2007 would be #2. i think both were better than our NC team in '04, simply because of Landers. just an opinion.

Honestly, I can only really comment on teams since I set foot on campus in 1994, but here's my list. Most have been mentioned before.
1937, 1976, 1987, 1994, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2006, 2007
Obviously, there were some other good teams in 80 years of football. We are 25th all time in winning percentage amoung DI schools.

For Massachusetts 1963-1964 stand out. Of course, that was another era. I'm not sure how to compare 2003 and 2006, since I wasn't there. Never even saw any games in 2003.
