Lehigh suffered three upsets, couldn't pull off any of their own, though they came close, and gave up two pins falling to the Cowboys 31-6.
At 125 Freshman Matt Fisk gave Coleman Scott a good tussel but lost 6-2. Jeff Santo followed at 133 losing a nailbiter, 7-6.
Lehigh got on the board with #3 Cory Cooperman defeating Dan Fishkorn 5-1, but Freshman Trevor Chinn was welcomed to 'big time' wrestling getting pinned by #1 Zack Esposito..
Then came the shockers: Derek Zinck led the entire match only to give up a late takedown to lose 3-2. The marquee match at 165 saw Johnny Hendricks upset #1 Troy Letters 5-2 with an escape and takedown in the last minute. Travis Frick was then, also, upset, 9-1 by Brandon Mason before Lehigh's Dave Helfrich broke the streak with a solid 5-3 win over Rusty Blackmon at 184.
Lehigh's shot at returning a thunderbolt of an upset almost occured at 197 where unranked Paul Weibel, subbing for Matt Cassidy, lost to #1 Jake Rosholt 8-7. Weibel took down Roshot twice, but gave up a 5 point move that was the difference. In the heavyweight final #1 Steve Mocco, as expected, pinned Tom Curl in 4:42.
A disappointing showing. No one was expecting a win, but most believed the team score would and should have been closer. If Lehigh had been able to win the four close ones, OSU still wins, 19-18. Somewhere in between was where I thought we'd be. Seeing how they bounce back tomorrow night against the Sooners will tell us alot. Sort of shows the disparity between the top eschelon and the second half of the top ten.
