5/29/48:
Moments after Vulcan’s Forge upsets Coaltown to win the Withers Stakes at Belmont Park, three people near the pari-mutuel windows engage in a minor scuffle that sets off a stampede of spectators. Hundreds in the crowd of more than 41,000 are caught up in a frenzied surge to the exits, fueled by rumors of a steam pipe explosion and/or a runaway horse. When the dust settles, 162 racegoers have to be treated for minor injuries, and the woman and two men whose altercation set the chain reaction in motion are arrested.
