5/28/35:
Barney Ross regains the world welterweight championship from Jimmy McLarnin with a 15-round unanimous decision. The bout concludes an epic three-fight trilogy that began exactly one year ago tonight with a split decision victory by Ross. McLarnin returned the favor in September, also by a split verdict. In tonight’s encounter, Ross leaves nothing to chance, winning on all three scorecards, 9-4-2, 8-6-1 and, in a bizarre twist, 5-3-7 from referee Jack Dempsey. Seven rounds being scored even by the Manassa Mauler raises many an eyebrow at ringside. Ross will retain the welterweight crown until the last fight of his career in 1938, when he’s demolished by Henry Armstrong.
