For all of those that have b!tched about the painted green concrete in the UNIDOME being older than the players, celebrate.
UNI is apparently receiving a $500,000 grant towards for a new field turf type of playing surface. The grant is coming from a regional foundation funded by casino gambling revenues in the state of Iowa (how do you like them apples NCAA? xlolx).
No official word is out other than the grant amount and explanation being published on the foundation's website. Apparently the administration is trying to get the system in place in time for the season.
Apparently no recession in Iowa, as University of Iowa is also replacing their natural grass with Field Turf.

I seem to remember more bragging from UNI fans about how hard the surface was and how difficult it is for opponents to get used to ... than 'b!tiching'...
I guess its just up to the keys to keep your home field advantage now, huh?

Huh? quit being a douche. People are so ignorant about the old turf. Its not that hard, and if you have ever been on it you would know. Nobody was bragging about how difficult it is to play on for oppenents. Everyone in the country used to have the same playing surface, and nobody said anything about it then.

Honestly, the turf was not that bad when I ran on it back in the day. But then again, I was never tackled by two 300 pound linemen.

OK, I was just making it all up.
I never played on the surface so I really can't comment on it, just remember the UNI fans that came on the Richmond message board before 12.12.08, bragging about how hard the carpet was going to be for UR to adjust to.
You still will have the keys though, right?

Yes we still have the keys.
I think most teams find that the UNIDOME is a bit of a different place to play because
1. Field is perfectly flat, which some QBs have difficultly adjusting to, especially on longer passes.
2. Place gets loud because it is enclosed, and has concrete walls reflecting the sound
3. The fans are literally on top of the players on the sideline - about 8' from first seat to the sideline.
Teams can overcome those differences, obviously. But, all together they do make the place a bit unique.

You are correct. I have done more than my share of attacking the turf. Although I always preferred poking fun at the old blow-up roof. I was there in 1987 & 1992. I think it was 1992 when the roof came down on us before the game. The security guards scared all of us half dead. We sat by a very bad group of fans, but in general, the people at Cedar Falls treated us very well. I would like to go again some time.
Glad to see the new turf. The new padding will cut down on that echo though ...which is good for the visitors I guess.

For what its worth, UI says the Field Turf will save money overall. Tens of thousands are currently spent on mowing the lawn (and, I'm in the wrong business, obviously).

Now the contest is on to see which college football team is the last to have the old type of rug.

What do you guys have on the field in Fargo? When we played in the Dome a few years ago I ran around on it with the NU team and I thought it was pretty hard.

It's the same stuff. It would be nice to have some of the new stuff, but the turf we have now we bought new and is actually in good condition. We can't really justify paying 1-2 million on new turf when our basketball team plays in a high school gym. It is time for some of the other sports to receive an upgrade in facilities.

Yeah we will still have our keys. What is so strange about that? Many other schools do the same thing.
And whats with the date? I guess its a nice honor that beating UNI is a date that opposing teams remember forever.xthumbsupx

Good, they're getting rid of that ligament shredding surface.

When I watched the Bison play there last year, it didn't even look like the yard lines were straight when looking out from our seats on about the 10 yard line.

Well, typical Bison fans are crosseyed with mullets. So, take that for what it's worth...xlolx

I do have a lazy eye, but that's beside the point. Tell me that the 5-yard line isn't bowed in the middle.

Ha ha ha, lazy eye. That's hysterical. As for the pic, the big eye (no pun intended) don't lie, that 5 yard line is about as croked as Kelsey's a$$.

To keep in step with every other college football field in America, the field is crowned in the middle. Not surprised that a Bison fan couldn't figure that outxlolx.

UNI Pike said that the field is flat which is what one would expect in an indoor stadium since there is no rainwater that needs to be drained away.

well, at least now that they seem to have gotten the roof problems fixed, there isn't any rainwater. :p

Note to self: no sarcastic remarks around the stuffy crowd. I thought it would be fairly obvious, considering we don't need to drain water from the field, but I stand corrected....
