Phil Mickelson’s wife, Amy, has been diagnosed with breast cancer, and the three-time major champion says he will suspend his PGA Tour schedule indefinitely.

Mickelson’s management company says Amy Mickelson will begin treatment with major surgery as early as the next two weeks.

They were married in 1996 and have three children.

Good man. Much better than the John Edwards approach.

Phil's always appeared to be a class act - good luck to him and his wife.

"quit" is a strong word.

I think you would been better off with the word they are using elsewhere - "suspends play". I am hopeful with the treatment today, the Phil's wife gets rid of her cancer and that Phil resumes playing.

Truly a class act move!

Sad to hear about his wife. It's amazing the # of people that get cancer and they can't find a cure. Also confounds me that millions of people die every year from it, some really quickly like those with pancreatic cancer, yet swine flu can dominate headlines.

My mother and mother-in-law both got it about a year apart and both beat it, so there are effective treatments out there if caught early. I hope Phil's wife's case isn't very advanced.

No question if caught early, it can be beat. My mother, now 80, had breast cancer over 15 years ago, underwent major surgery, and is doing fine. All the best to Amy in her battle.

Ahh, that's it. Then you need to stay off MSNBC :p

Yahoo Sports - Wife's cancer leaves Mickelson off tour
ESPN.com - Mickelson off tour as wife battles cancer
CNNSI.com - Wife battling cancer, Mickelson puts golf on hold

Seriously, hope for the best for Mrs. Lefty.

Best of luck to your MOM!!!!xthumbsupxxthumbsupx

I have many friends in the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition and they are encouraged and blown away by Phil's announcement.

Of course one of them contrasted his decision with the decision of John Edwards to run for President when his wife was diagnosed with cancer but that detracts from the idea the Phil is a standup guy.

Way to go Phil!!!!!xthumbsupxxthumbsupxxthumbsupx

My prayers go out to the Mickelson family. Cancer is an awful disease that can claim anyone. I had a friend who was diagnosed with acute leukemia on May 4th of this year, she passed away the morning of May 7th. She was 21 years old and was as healthy as any of us a week prior to her passing, or so we thought. I pray that this doesn't happen to the Mickelsons or any other family but the reality is that it can, all we can do is accept the fact that God has a plan for us all that we were never meant to understand or agree to.
