The first step to solving your problem is admitting you have one :p

How many is your team ( or any team) returning?
Colgate 5/7

The number technically is 5 of 11, but you could easily say 6 of 11. Jordan Scott graduated, but his backup Nate Eachus, who started 3 of the last 4 regular season games due to Scott's injury (and saw significant time in the regular season finale and playoff game), is returning and will be the #1 guy

Not counting Eachus, the returnees are:
Sr. LG Zach Posey
Sr. TE Adrien Schriefer
Sr. WR Pat Simonds-1st Team All-PL
Jr. WR Doug Rosnick
Jr. QB Greg Sullivan-2nd Team All-PL

UNH returns 6 starters on offense (Toman, Kackert, Wright, Sicko, Larkin, Neill by my count), 9 starters on defense (Young, Long, McNally, Peters, Ware, Vasso, Hinds, Souza, Klein), and 1 kicker (Tom Manning).

They'll have 3 new starters on the OL, 2 new starters at WR (though Negron started some games last year), a new corner (Anthony Gorell, probably), a new punter and a new LB that played a lot last year (Devon Jackson).

Our SID's Say 4/4/2, which is pretty much accurate, however, helping our case on...

Offense... Mike Brown is not included in returning starters, although he played frequently at WR at the end of the year (as the 3rd WR, and 2nd WR when Dominic Bolden went down with injury.)

We bring in 3 transfers (Tommy Beecher, QB, Ervin Garner and Freddie Brown, WR)

Defense... Asa Champman returns, who saw plenty of playing time at NG.

Doncel Bolt returns, who started for Nick Hursky during his injury

Both starting CB's leave, but Last year's "Most Improved" in spring practice, and projected nickle back last year, Donald Manns, is healthy and is back...

I'd say about 19 starters. We only lose 4 players TOTAL from last years team.

I understand one must cut off the numbers at some point - however, APP State has 12 Defensive starters returning - We lost 2 starters (Tony Robertson - DE & Dominick McDuffie - DB) for the season at the JMU game, both of whom are back as well as the 2 players who started the remainder of the season and Leonard Love who graduated ended up only starting 3-4 games because of nagging injuries and a returning player started many games in his place - The one complete loss was LB Pierre Banks who will be hard to replace ----

Saying that Weber returns only four on defense is a bit deceptive, but it is the official line from the WSU SID. It is hard to tell from the rotation and game stats who was the "starter" and who was the sub.

Three of the four returning defensive starters were first team all-conference (DE Kevin Linehan, S Beau Hadley, CB Josh Morris) , and the fourth, though injured late in the season (DT Ryan Eastman), made honorable mention. It is not yet clear whether a fifth starter, cornerback Thyrell Lewis, will be eligible for 2009, but he participated in spring ball.

Six additional returning defensive "substitutes" played in 11 or more games last season. Defensive linemen Joe Larson and Brighton Barkdull combined for 34 tackles, 3 tackles for a loss, 2 sacks, 2 QB hurries, and 2 pass breakups in 2008.

A couple of key transfers at linebacker and safety will help immensely.

So the 2009 Weber defense will not be as weak as one might suppose. Linebacker is really the only question mark.

On offense, the Wildcats return the #1 passer, #1 receiver, #1 rusher and #1 kicker in the Big Sky, plus a host of outstanding players at all positions.

That's why's you have won so many games in the last few years, you start 12 guys on defense! I thought all along that something was fishy. I thought your coaches were good, you had great players, the fans were great, but I was all wrong. You cheat, you play 12 men at one time. Well dang, why didn't all the rest of the teams think of that. xconfusedx

We got it from Penn State, I believe, they used it in a bowl game a number of years ago - that 4-4-4 stack is a tough D to beat ----

Cal Poly has 8 defensive starters returning and 4 offensive starters. The offense does have three other players returning on offense with at least 4 starts.

Weber State lost 8 players with 7 or more starts on defense
(63 starts total out of 14 games) so it's more like losing 4.5 starters
and 6.5 returning. xreadx

Offense (7)

RB 22 James Aston 5-8 203
WR 3 Chris Lucas 5-10 174
OT 61 Chris Crockett 6-3 283
OG 64 Travis Best 6-2 302
OG 78 Hunter Schmidt 6-3 304
OT 73 Travis Watson 6-2 295
K 17 Taylor Wilkins 5-7, 150

Defense (5)

DT 57 Kevin Smith 6-2 308
DE 8 Chris Brown 6-2 220
LB 42 Luke McCall 6-0 227
DB 20 Jarvis Pippins 5-8 164
DB 5 Randy Stewart 5-11 189

Nice group of returning starters, but we lost people at key positions. QB is the biggest question with Bomar gone and lacking in WR, LB and DB areas. SHSU is getting some players back that were out for season last year for various reasons that were key elements to the team in 2007...

Chris Poullard RB 6-0, 205 (Tough runner and good size.)
Darnell Jones WR 5-10, 185 (Good hands, quick, not scared of middle of field)
Michael Capperelli P 5-8, 162 (Strong leg, will help weak special teams)
John Clark TE 6-4, 245 (Big kid, nice hands, was out hurt all year)

McNeese has 6 offensive and 3 defensive starters coming back. I don't look at the shortage of defensive starters returning as necessarily bad because the defense was very ineffective last year. The Cowboys finished rated 61st in total defense and 86th in scoring defense; giving up 29.3 points per game.
