I was just looking in the weekly release by the SoCon and noticed the playoff winning %'s by conference

Interesting considering the A-10's %, must have been horrible before the last few seasons

I may be wrong but I believe the Yankee to A-10 to CAA transitions have seen many teams come and go. May be difficult to compare. Any A-10 fans know where I can get a summary of the history of the conference?

There were not as many teams leaving as I thought. Only UConn, Boston U and Vermont.

I unsure of how they figured some of the numbers though. Independents are listed as being 3-2 all-time when in reality, independents have won 7 national titles. And then in the next box down, it shows SoCon teams being 7-4 versus independents.

It is amazing, since the A-10 has gone 27-16 in the playoffs since the 1998 season. If the SoCon page numbers are correct, that means the conference was 7-31 prior to that.

The turnaround has been pretty dramatic, but the most impressive part about it is that pretty much the whole conference has contributed. Not only have 11 different A-10 teams made the playoffs in that time (10 current members plus UConn), but 10 of those teams won a game during the stretch (only Northeastern didn't win). Even more impressive is that 5 different teams have appeared in the semifinals, with UNH and Richmond having a chance to increase that number to 7 on Saturday.

The only conference that has shown the same quality depth is the Gateway, but they have not had the same playoff success of late as the A-10.

If they're not counting Georgia Southern's and Youngstown State's win as Independents, then you can't take this to be the exact numbers. How many of the Gateway's wins would be taken away for YSU's wins while they were independent?

Yes. An alternative is to look at teams currently in each conference. Do that and Georgia Southern's history as an idependent really helps the Southern.

The Southland has seen a lot of changes. When it started in I-AA it had Louisiana Tech, Arkansas State, North Texas, and Northeast Louisiana. Northwestern State came in later as did Nicholls State. Troy State was in for a while.

But however you look at it the thing about the A10 is accurate. Until 1998, When UMass won the first national championship for the A10, programs that are now in the A10 did have a very bad playoff record overall. Obviously in recent years that league has really turned things around.

The overall talent level and competitive play has increased significantly during the last 10 years in the A-10. One looks at your own team every year and you see improvements. Then the season starts and you realize the conference opponents have improved just as much. This has been going on for a decade and the playoff results demonstrate this.

I've always adhered to doing that when you're talking about current strength of a conference. In that instance I'd use all of GSU's games, but not any of Marshall's. However, if you're talking historical strength of the conference, then I'd include Marshall's, but not GSU's prior to joining.

Since Marshall left the conference after the '96 season, it's comical how little has changed in the SoCon. In the intervening 9 postseasons, Wofford's appearance in 2003 is the only one by a SoCon team outside of the Big Three. The SoCon has the exact same 27-16 record as the A-10 since '98, but it is almost completely on the back of GSU, which has gone 15-5 while winning 2 titles.

When did ASU lose all those home games? I figured we would have a much better home winning %.
Anyone have a link to the last 20 years or so of ASU history.

The Great West Football Conference has the "greatest" winning percentage in the playoffs of all I-AA conferences. The Great West playoff winning percentage is currently 100%. Cal Poly is the Great West's first playoff participant and they are currently 1-0 with last weeks win over Montana. As for most wins as a conference we are a little behind the rest of the more established conferences. :) Good luck to all the remaining teams this weekend.

Thanks.....using that website we are 80-20 in our last 100 games at home.

I didn't pay much attention to the Mountaineers until I went there in 89. The 85 team went 8-3 with two of the losses to South Carolina by 7 and Wake Forest by 3. And didn't make the playoffs. That was probably one of the best teams ASU has had going simply by scores.

The more I learn of ASU's playoff history, the less I want to know about ASU's playoff history.

That'd be because we don't have much of a playoff history Kep. :bawling:

I was at ASU when we beat W&M in 2001 and then lost to GS. I remember 2002 fondly thinking we'd smoke Maine and then end up losing by 1. 2003-2004 meh.

I think we're cursed.. :p
