We'll know what kind of scholarship "hits" schools take and which schools are on the ropes as far as possibly being unable to compete in NCAA postseason play.

The teams with historic penalties are the ones that may be subject to a postseason ban this year, unless they're given an exception or have brought up their four-year APR numbers to above the threshold.

AFAIK the teams in the "first-time" category might be subject to historic penalties this year, but nothing further.

I think Montana State has righted the ship, but as far as the others I'm a lot less sure.

I'm assuming it does since those are in the place of NCAA postseason competition and teams can not participate in both those and NCAA playoffs...correct?

The SWAC is a Division I conference. We're talking about Division I sports, particularly football on this board. I can not recall if the discussion included those two games as we have several schools impacted on that list - CCSU, Southern and Sacred Heart.

AFAIK I believe it does. Only SU would be subject to the postseason ban since they're working off historic penalties - the other "first-time" offenders might be subject to scholarship/other restrictions, but not postseason bans.

Obviously, if Big Sky team(s) with historic penalties gets hit again, they'd be ineligible to play in the FCS playoffs. If there are enough of them, you have to wonder what the FCS subcommittee might do. For example, what if EWU, Weber State, Sac State and Montana State all were ineligible for the league title and autobid? (I'm not saying this would happen, but it is conceivable.)

BOZEMAN, Mont. -- Twelve of Montana State's 14 athletic programs
increased their Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores from a year ago, 12
Bobcat squads easily cleared the NCAA's minimum benchmark of 925, and
Bobcat football continued to dramatically improve its four-year average
APR score, according to a report issued by the NCAA on Wednesday.

"We took significant steps forward this year," said MSU Athletic
Director Peter Fields. "That is a testimony to hard work by our coaches
in identifying and recruiting student-athletes with the ability to
succeed at Montana State, and to our student-athletes. (MSU Associate
Athletic Director) Camie Bechtold and (Faculty Athletic Representative)
Bob Oakberg have worked hard with our Academic Services staff to develop
a comprehensive plan, and it's gratifying that the plan is working."

MSU women's golf led Bobcat teams with an APR score of 992. Twelve of
the school's 14 athletic programs scored at least 934, above the 925
benchmark below which the NCAA may institute penalties, and both
football (892) and men's basketball (900) moved toward that mark.

Montana State's "improved academic performance," "steady improvement,"
and ability to meet its "goal APR number and (implement) the Improvement
Plan" developed for football triggered the relief from mandated
penalties, according to the NCAA. The Bobcat football program may grant
the equivalent of 63 full scholarships in 2009-10, the maximum allowed
in the Football Championship Subdivision, while awarding 71 football
student-athletes athletic-related scholarships and 25.0 initial athletic
scholarships. MSU is also allowed 18.0 hours of countable activity per
week. Bobcat Football improved its four-year average APR score to 892
with a score of 941 for 2007-08, the most recent year compiled by the
NCAA.

Each NCAA Division I institution's APR is a measurement factoring the
academic success and retention of student-athletes. Scores for each
sport reported are four-year averages.

First I will acknowledge that the CAA has some good academic schools. As previously pointed out, however, the APR has almost nothing to do with which is a "superior academic league". Further, the Patriot League had an APR well above the that of the CAA, so I'm not sure what your point is. (PL also has a much higher graduation rate - which also doesn't measure which is a "superior academic league".)

If you are going to measure "superior education", I suggest you look at SAT scores, acceptance rates, USNews rankings, average earnings of graduates, etc, etc, etc.
