Good for UD football, but bad for the State of Delaware. I'm no huge proponent of gambling, but when a state with less than a million people has a $700M budget deficit, desperate times call for desperate measures. This vote was killed by the lobbying of the three existing racinos in Delaware who are petrified of the state breaking up their monopoly. The thing they seem to be in denial about is that they are going to die a slow death anyway with PA and MD now starting their own racinos. The days of endless streams of buses full of the elderly and impoverished from Baltimore, DC, and Philly are about to completely dry up with nothing unique to offer them. They'll be able to blow their retirements and paychecks playing slots in their own states.

This still isn't over though. State workers, who will be taking an 8% pay cut under the new budget, will be rallying in Dover today and the timing of this vote was impeccable for them to use this as a rallying cry to save their salaries. The vote was two short of passage with three representatives abstaining. Don't be surprised if it passes in a few weeks.

The latest thumbs down vote may only be a temporary reprieve for UD & DSU. I've heard that the bill will likely be revised an reintroduced to the Senate.

Both the House and Governor support the measure. If a compromise can be reached to appease the 3 exisiting casinos, there will be far less opposition in the Senate.

The Fat Lady is no where near ready to sing on this issue so stay tuned.

So sad and so true. That's why I told everyone I knew in Maryland to vote against the slots bill. I think if more people realized exactly who is playing slots there is no way the bill even comes close to passing. xsmhx

There's nothing to do in Harrington 11 months of the year anyway (the state fair is in July). Strictly a NIMBY action by the racinos. But I agree we haven't heard the last of it.xcoolxxrolleyesx

I've only been in the Dover slots twice, both times for a Christmas party when I worked out of Dover AFB. Talk about the dregs of humanity. I still have a vivid picture in my head when I had to walk through the slots floor to get to the banquet room of old ladies with lanyards around their necks that held casino charge cards that were inserted into the slots. They appeared to be literally attached to the machines. Very disturbing.

That being said, I have no problem with gambling in my state. It's a voluntary tax. If you don't want to blow your dough, don't play. If you don't want lung cancer, don't smoke. If you don't want to pay gas tax, get a bike or move closer to work. We all have choices to make in life.

Hey that could have been my mother!!! xeyebrowx
The cards are like rewards cards or something. She plays slots while my uncle will watch the races/simulcast. Harrington's problems are their own...my mother prefers Dover over Harrington. She's a smart player and has a set limit when she walks in, and I have to say she generally walks out with more than she came with. She took me a few years ago just before Christmas and I walked out with close to $500 and only spent $40 out of [her] pocket. I refuse to spend my own money there! xnonox

By all accounts, this isn't a dead issue. The state still has a massive funding gap and this barely lost and it was the existing racinos that lobbied heavily to beat it. Since this just steps closer to massive cuts in salaries of state employees, and even that won't come close to fixing the state's budget, it's very likely this will come up again in a few months, if not weeks.

I would fully expect some gambling to be made legal, and then if the NCAA chooses to make a stand, the issue of sports gambling in Delaware, Montana, and Nevada will certainly come under scrutiny.
