5/1/94:
Brazilian Formula One driver Ayrton Senna is killed at the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, near Bologna, Italy. Failing to negotiate a turn known as the Tamburello Curve, the 34-year-old world champion slams into a concrete wall at 192 mph. A subsequent examination of his car reveals that poor workmanship had left his modified steering column vulnerable to metal fatigue. As a result, Senna could not steer the car on the difficult turn.
