View Full Version : Team Breakout Year Player?

Who on your team you feel will have a breakout year? Most of us know your returning starters so they are already projected to have a good season. Tell us about some of the guys we may not have heard that much of.
For the Spiders we lost a premier running back and two great book ends. So I will project two:
Justin Forte (RB): He has been plaqued by injury. If he stays healthy I expect him to carry the load that will fill the void. He is not the big back we are accutom to but a faster more agile runner.
Pierre Turner (DL): When his opportunity to replace Logan or Sidbury can he did a good job. He forced a lot of QB's out of their comfort zone and had a few sacks as well as tackles for a lost last season.
I am expecting both these guys to make their marks on the 2009 season.

I can't say anyone individually on our offense because every year we have a three headed monster--I'll take a wild guess and say Mitch Allen (QB) because of his ability to slice and dice the defense when running the option.
Defense--Mychael Johnson(CB)

For UNI I think that all the WR who got more experience after Johnny and Vic got dismissed will all greatly benefit from that experience, and I also think while the DB's will be very young and may show it early, but as the season the overall talent that they all have will begin to show.

Obvious choice here, but Drew Dudzik (QB), but possibly Justin Thorpe (r-Fr) taking over the QB spot this summer. Both are pretty big studs so either one will work.
Look out for RB Corwin Acker. He's so good that last year's starter Griff Yancey was moved to FS to make room for him to play. That being said, lookout for Griff Yancey at FS, he was a STUD during the spring game and played the position very naturally.
Also lookout for Chase Williams, LB (r-FR) and Rock McCarter (SR) WR...

Played some last year as a freshamn but was injured and got a medical redshirt. Should I a good year I would imagine.

The JC transfer played well in the spring game and is reputed to have a cannon. The ex FBS recruit (I think Syracuse?) has a great recruitment reputation, and should be able to team with Cuttino/Gowins to create a pass option in a run heavy offense.

For W&M, I look for QB R.J. Archer to break out. Started his first two years at WR, and switched back to QB in '08 to back up Jake Phillips. Started against Villanova and threw for 307 yards and a TD, and also rushed for two TDs. Athletic, with a very strong arm, he has never disappointed in his past roles as a WR, punt returner, holder, and on-side kick specialist.
On the defensive side, I look for DT Bryan Jean-Pierre, and CB Terrell Wells. Jean-Pierre missed all of '08, after contributing at DE in '07. He's up to 270, and was impressive this spring moving to the inside. Wells missed the last eight games last year, after playing as a true freshman in '07.
Archer below.

For Bucknell QB CJ Hopson. If he beats out Trigg (which I suspect he will) and if he stays healthy. He had to pretty good games to close out last year.

Yes, Gordon is definitely in the mix for this question, as are several other WR's on the Mountain Hawks' squad. If one or more really 'step up' this year, our offense will fly.

Offense: Matt Szczur WR/KR/Wildcat QB- The most explosive player on Villanova's team and the most versatile player in the country. If you stop Matt Szczur, you most likely will beat Villanova. He was hurt at the beginning of last year, yet he was still a monster.
Defense: Terrence Thomas LB- Has started almost every game in his college career and is a dangerous force. I could see him getting upwards of 100 tackles with possibly five or six sacks because he's a very effective blitzer.

They were both starters in 08. One of this thread's requirements was it is supposed to be someone breaking into the starting lineup.
Since we don't take xfers, and didn't lose many, it's a hard call.
Offensively, I think it will be by committe. By that, I mean RB's Barbarro & Doss will spell Ball, and perform well, wowing you at times. I think the WR White has a chance to be special also. My wish list is that we can get more out of the TE spot.
Defensively, Pitts will replace Koroma and I think will perform well there. Not yet sure who's going to win that Rover/Safety spot yet. Again with the wish list, is that the DL players can equal what we had last year.

I can think of three possiblities on offense.
Wr Benardo Henry
TE Corday Clark
Wr Immanuelle Friddle (even though he played a lot last season, I think he has more potential than he has shown).
As far as defense, I'd have to see how August workouts go.

it's definitely Dudzik, hands down. first of all, we can put the Thorpe stuff to rest, Drew will be starting all year unless he gets hurt. Spring Game sealed it for me.
Drew has the POTENTIAL to lead this team all the way... and if you disagree and saw the second half of the Montana game, i don't know what he DIDN'T show you in that game, especially coming in with no warning or first-team practice reps. he's got the whole package. big shoes to fill though. people will want to say he's "way less athletic than Rodney" just because he's white (people will do this and you know they will), but once you've seen him play, the kid is a flat-out athlete. whew, that was long.

I agree on Dudzik, although the Spring Game had to raise some durability issues.
He's technically a starter, but I'd like to see Kerby Long live up to the hype on offense. I also think that one of our young TBs will breakout this year.
On defense, it's a sentimental pick, but I think Scotty McGee is going to step up his CB play and shine on defense.

Plus if he really ran a 4.31 in the rain...yikes! If he has a good year at CB and continues to shine as a KR/PR, he could be a day 1 pick next year. The scouts were eating up that 4.31 time he ran in front of them the other day...

At SIU, it may depend on who wins the starting RB position. The top two candidates are Richard White and Deji Karim. Either is capable of rushing for over 1000 yards this year if they stay healthy.

Last year UD's defense was just trying to catch their breath befor they had to get back on the field. With a better offense you will see a better defense. By the way if UD's offense is better and and any of your W&M WR's even get their hands on the ball UD's defense will make them pay. This Defense will smack you in the face and then pick you up off the turf. We will only be an average team in terms of wins and loses but the defense will be nasty.

Quick could be the best WR in the country by the time he's a senior. No one in the conference can defend this guy one on one, or three on one as we saw vs. Wofford last year.xsmiley_wix

For UNH, the defense rotates so much that it's going to be hard to pick a player. I think Devon Jackson and Sean Ware will be the best 1/2 punch at LB we've had in awhile.
Offensively, the WR position is wide open. I think Kevon Mason has a chance to be a real breakout candidate, if I've been reading things correctly. I'm HOPING that J.T. Wright can finally assert himself as a junior, too, what with Terrance Fox being suspended for his Jr. year.
