View Full Version : Sewak to I-A? Hatfield to GSU?

Rice head coach Ken Hatfield just resigned as head coach of their 1-10 program. They were 3-8 the year before. They run the triple option and are looking for someone to come to Rice and turn the program around at low cost.

Sewak ran an option at Georgia Southern. Would come to a Rice team that has the athletes in place to make the option work. He'd probably come cheap as well.

Or perhaps Hatfield to Georgia Southern? He has a proven track record of 168-140-4 in 27 seasons with stints at Air Force, Arkansas, Clemson and Rice. Probably would look for one last hurrah and he runs a clean program.

Thoughts?

If GSU hired a coach coming off a 1-10 season, Sam Baker might want to look into hiring a few bodyguards. The Auburn O-Line coach seems to be the only plausible guy right now (that I've heard mentioned, anyway). 168-140-4 is not a GSU-approved record, either. Granted it was with different schools of different talent levels against different competition, but GSU I think will be looking for someone with a "winning tradition" to tout. IMO, they had to have somebody already lined up. No way they'd take this chance to replace Sewak with this guy. The deal's probably already done or in the works.

I just threw in Hatfield to GSU to keep this a I-AA thread...

I see Sewak applying for Rice HC job though...

I heard he left as well then saw the same article as you. I think it was a rumor that hit the radios, But ESPN cleared the air. I think your link is not working so I reposted the link for those interested in viewing the article.

What about the Houston Chronicle story in today's edition? At the 3:00 PM press conference he said one thing and ESPN as well as others put out the story . But then the article in the Houston Chronicle states that everything took an new direction less than 12 hours later. Was it because he could stay but he would have to make some staff changes and refused to do it? That type of scenario has happened more than once in college football. Yet, there is another press conferenc scheduled today at 3:00 pm. I guess like any good circus, it needs a carousel for people to ride!!!

According to John Lopez's column, he was already working out his buyout and such on Monday before the Tuesday press conference...

When I talked to someone at Rice today, I didn't ask any questions becaue I had other things to take care of, but they said today was going to be a crazy day...

Why doesn't Rice just drop down & join the Southland? When was the last time they were competitive in football. I know they won the CWS a few ago but it seems like they are lame in most other sports. Correct me if I am wrong.

They did a study on it recently...

And FYI, They won the 2005 WAC Commisioners Cup because they are good across the board. That was the SECOND time in a row (second place in 2003).

Rice has been to the NCAA twice and WNIT a few times here in the last few years. Very solid WBB team. Football, maybe not. MBB has gone NIT, VB has been near the top, XC and T&F program has won conference titles (probably will be top 3 in C-USA), golf team is solid and tennis has produced national champs in doubles (Barker brothers). Soccer made NCAA this year. Conclusion, Rice has been competitive across the board EXCEPT in football.

lest we forget, the Rice baseball team also won the 2004 World Series as well!

Who could forget? He had already mentioned it, so I didn't...

Rice has one helluva baseball facility. It's beautiful! The basketball court leaves something to be desired...

Don't have the figures in front of me, but I recall that Rice is a fairly small institution--about 2500 students. To run a I-A football program would result in a significant percentage of the student body--at a school with other sports, and a reputation of very competitive admission standards, so I don't know how they can be competitive in I-A football, with the occasional aberration. I agree they should consider going I-AA, with everything else staying at I-A. If not for the distance, they'd be a good fit for the PL..

Going I-AA does them no good financially and alums/donors would be ticked. They have no athletic or academic ties to I-AA institutions. Going I-AA to them is like I-A while not helping things, possibly losing more money (alums/donors dropping like flies, lower attendance)...

They've had four losing seasons in a row (2002-2005) in football, but no need for them to go I-AA. Heck, Vandy now has 23 losing seasons in a row. Good luck to Coach Hatfield. He's a hell of a nice man! GO CATAMOUNTS!!!

Same reason Army and Navy remain I-A for football, but are in the PL for all other sports (except wrestling, which is not a PL sport).

The fact that the Auburn coach is making twice as much as an assistant as Sewak was as a head coach might be a deterent to his coming to Statesboro.

I feel for any coach that takes that job & wants to win in D1A.

First of all, GSU has much better athletes than Rice.

For many years I researched the roots of the Spread triple and it leads back to Rice's H-man. I dont think you can make a judgment on this coach based on the win loss record.

My girlfriend is a Rice Alum so I've visited a few times. They have a HUGE endowment left from their oil rich founder, not to mention they lease land in Houston to retail shops which also brings money in, not that their alum don't do well in the real world and give back. Their stadium holds 70,000 because it was built to host the Super Bowl. They have roughly 3,000 students and the academics are strong. It's a tight nit school because the students live in 'Colleges' their entire four years. Even if you move off campus you are still considered a member of the 'college.' They graduate by colleges regardless of what major you were. It's odd in a way but reminds me a lot of the Greek system or summer camp. It is impressive that they field I-A athletics but besides football they really do hold their own and in years past the football was much better. Has their coach even been fired yet? I believe I heard he was staying through next season at least.
