SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- There could be another Cal Poly wide receiver in the National Football League this fall.

Tre¹dale Tolver confirmed Sunday night that he has been invited to the Cleveland Browns¹ rookie mini-camp, scheduled for this weekend in Ohio. The mini-camp gives Tolver an opportunity to showcase his skills and to sign a free-agent contract.

Tolver was a second-team All-Great West Conference selection last fall after catching 30 passes for 383 yards and three touchdowns, leading Cal Poly to an 8-3 overall mark, its third Great West Conference championship in the last five years and a berth in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

Miller, Lewis, Sign NFL Contracts

CEDAR CITY, Utah, April 27 – Two former Southern Utah football players signed free agent contracts with NFL teams Sunday following the league’s annual draft. Wide receiver Nick Miller and cornerback DeWayne Lewis signed with the Oakland Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars, respectively.
Miller, who was named the Great West Conference’s special teams player of the year in 2008, was contacted by the Raiders shortly after the conclusion of the draft. He said that he and his agent negotiated a contract that included a signing bonus. Lewis was also contacted Sunday evening and worked out the details of his contract through his agent.
A transfer from Scottsdale CC, Miller (Scottsdale, Ariz.) led the nation (FCS) in all-purpose yards in 2008. He holds the SUU records for single-game, single-season and career kickoff return yards and is second on the SUU single-season and career punt return lists. Last year he returned 49 kickoffs for 993 yards, breaking his own record of 914 yards on 41 returns he set in 2007. He also returned 24 punts a total of 384 yards in 2008 and ended his career with 559 yards on 43 returns. As a receiver, Miller caught 55 passes for 763 yards and three TDs in 2008, following his 2007 season when he caught 35 passes for 433 yards and a score.
Lewis (Denver. Colo.) transferred to SUU from Michigan State and played three seasons of football for the Thunderbirds as well as competing in track two seasons. He tallied 51 tackles, with two sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception as a junior in 2007, when he led SUU’s cornerbacks in tackles. Last year, under a new system, he finished the season with 35 tackles with another interception and four passes broken up. As a member of the Thunderbird track team he competed at the NCAA championships in the sprints in 2007.

Not sure any of them will get in a camp. The Sac State LBs are good but not very fast. My guess is that none of those guys you mentioned get more than a tryout but I would love to see them get a contract.

Edmonton, Alberta, and San Luis Obispo wouldn’t seem to have much in common to most people, but they might as far as Mark Restelli is concerned.

Restelli, a former Cal Poly linebacker, signed a two-year contract with the Canadian Football League’s Edmonton Eskimos on Wednesday, he said.

“I’m still sporting the green and gold,” Restelli laughed, noting the shared colors of the Eskimos and Mustangs. More importantly, Restelli said, he’ll likely be able to play a role similar to the rover one he did at Cal Poly, although he could be looked at as a safety.

Restelli, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound four-year starter at Cal Poly, had 54 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery last season.

At San Jose State’s pro day March 20, he ran a 40-yard dash in 4.56 seconds and posted a vertical jump of 39½ inches.

“I’m a little disappointed no NFL teams gave me a chance,” he said. “But if I do well for two years, I’ll have an opportunity to make a switch.”

Of course, one switch will be more immediate.

“It’s going to be odd going from hot Southern California weather,” the Trabuco Canyon native said. “But it seems like a great opportunity. I’m really excited.”

Edmonton opens the season July 2 by hosting the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Restelli might not be the only former Mustang joining the CFL next year.

Former Cal Poly quarterback Jonathan Dally will be competing at the British Columbia Lions’ tryout camp May 9 at Faith Lutheran High in Las Vegas.

Typically, such Lions camps begin with about 65 to 85 hopefuls, according to B.C. director of communications Jamie Cartmell. That group is then steadily whittled down throughout the tryout, he said, until a remaining handful of players is offered contracts.

In his two years as a Mustang, the 6-foot, 190-pound Dally passed for 4,198 yards, 52 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He rushed for 1,584 yards and 23 touchdowns on 334 carries. Dally’s career passing efficiency rating of 183.82 would’ve been an FCS record if he had enough completions to qualify, and he received seven write-in votes for the Walter Payton Award, given to the FCS’ best offensive player.

“I think my game would translate well to the CFL, with my mobility and ability to make throws on the run and get the ball where it needs to be,” Dally said.

Buck Pierce, the Lions’ starting quarterback, was discovered at one of the camps in Portland, Ore., in 2005. Undrafted by the NFL after coming out of New Mexico State in 2004, Pierce slowly worked his way up the Lions’ depth chart, and in 2008 completed 64.1 percent of his passes for 3,018 yards, 19 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Two days after Cal Poly’s 2008 season came to an end, then-Mustangs head coach Rich Ellerson praised Dally’s decision-making and athleticism.

“It’d be a shame if Jonathan Dally doesn’t find a niche somewhere,” said Ellerson, who coached in the CFL from 1984 to 1986. “He would be a spectacular guy in the CFL.”

A day after the Lions’ camp in Las Vegas, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats will hold a similar event at Falcon Stadium in Norwalk.

“I just need an opportunity,” Dally said.

Three other former Mustangs, center Stephen Field and running backs James Noble and Ryan Mole, are considering a variety of options, all three players said Wednesday.

Former Cal Poly receiver Ramses Barden was selected by the New York Giants in the third round of the NFL Draft on Sunday, while teammate Tre’dale Tolver, also a receiver, accepted an invite to the Cleveland Browns’ rookie mini-camp later that night.

The CFL will have to wait... the Giants want UAlbany's Raphael Nguti.

The mammoth 6-6, 330 lb. offensive lineman was set for a private workout with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian League. That workout was contingent on Nguti not getting an NFL invite.

That invite came today from the team Nguti watches practice all last summer. He'll be in mini-camp with Big Blue all this weekend in New Jersey trying to get a contract that will bring him back to UAlbany's campus in August for training camp.

Nguti, an All-American selection as a senior with the Danes, was seen by just about every NFL team last season. Raphael is represented by National Sports Management of Niskayuna.


Also - Lynch wasn't picked up by the Browns after his tryout.

Herb Donaldson would be an absolutely PERFECT complement to Bush and Pierre Thomas (who is very similar to Bush in many ways). Donaldson's a big dude, he could be a perfect replacement for Deuce. might take a while for fans to warm up to him.... Deuce is the most popular player in Saints history. at least in the past 20 years.

Just a guess, but probably because he's already been in one camp.

And yes, Lucas is a baller despite not having a good 2008 season (played hurt most of the season and never could get in 2007 shape). Hoping the Bucs (or some other team) gives him a shot.

The folks in New Orleans are pretty high on Herb and a lot are hoping he makes the team (unless they go after Edgerrin). Saints need a back who can run between the tackles (Thomas can do that to an extent and Bush is more valuable putting him in space)
