We'll know something this week on sand volleyball. I expect to see several conferences add the sport - including the Southland. Other FCS conferences that will add probably will include the CAA and the Big South, who have had teams compete in sand volleyball this spring.
I just hope that we do not see schools cutting a female sport and replacing it with sand volleyball.
According to Kathleen DeBoer, Executive Director of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, the proposal previously received 62 percent of the vote, but the NCAA prefers to review the measure when the tally is less than two-thirds (it only needs 50 percent of the vote now.)
If passed, Division I would spend a year developing the sport and begin official competition in 2011. But by the sound of some of the athletes Saturday, that's a few years too late.

That wont happen-- schools will simply cut sports like wrestling and mens soccer.

The clothing will be regulated in sand volleyball - I think that's one of the issues holding it up. They do not want to take girls out of HS and throw them out there in next to nothing. Figure we'll see shorts and not sure on the top.

True, they definitely won't have the, uh, Brazilian style "uniform".
But even if they wear the same type of shorts as regular volleyball, they'll still be HOT.

Approved!
LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 21, 2009) - The NCAA Division I Legislative Council added sand volleyball to the list of emerging sports for women, it was announced today, clearing the way for schools to use the sport toward minimum sponsorship requirements and minimum financial aid awards. NCAA Division II had already voted to add sand volleyball to the emerging sports list at the 2009 NCAA Convention in January.
“The opportunity to play sand volleyball in the spring will spur growth in the sport. I wish I had that opportunity when I was at Stanford!” said 2008 Olympic Beach Gold Medalist, Kerri Walsh. “Additionally, this development will give more women an opportunity for a professional volleyball career in the United States."
Capitalizing on the recent success of USA Volleyball’s beach teams in the Olympics and the growth in grassroots programs, the NCAA’s Committee on Women’s Athletics made the recommendation to add the sport to the emerging sports list last summer.

I'm sure I don't need to say who the ones who played were.

As a former Volleyball coach and beach volleyball player I do love this. And regardless of how the uniform issue is decided, this sport will be easier to watch then Olympic softball.
