Congrats, Johanna!!

Nilsson Wins NCAA Cross Country Championships
(11/21/2005) Terre Haute, Ind. – Junior Johanna Nilsson led the entire NCAA field with a course-breaking national championship performance to win this year’s NCAA Cross Country women’s individual title. The course record performance of 19:34 added another NCAA crown to her career accomplishments. Nilsson helped pace the Lumberjacks to a top 12 team finish with a total team score of 388 points. The team missed ninth place by only 27 points.
“I felt really good after the first 2k,” said Nilsson. “I did not want to break away as early as the pack separated, but it ended up working out for me. I had no idea about the lead that I had going into the home stretch. I just wanted to finish hard and give it my best.”

Nilsson’s performance topped all at the meet and definitely caught the eye of the NCAA committee, who awarded Nilsson the Women’s Athlete of the Meet honor. Nilsson, who came off a stellar NCAA Mountain Region individual title, was not predicted to take home the title at the championship meet.

Nilsson had huge support from teammate Nicole Gueldemeister. Gueldemeister, in her first National Championship showing, finished the meet in 36th-place with a time of 20:40. “This was a great experience for me,” commented the junior. “I have never run in a meet like this.”

The Lumberjacks claimed the 12th-place team position with 388 points behind Princeton who had 385. The Lumberjacks end another successful season as Big Sky Champions and now a top-12 nationally-ranked team.

I only see one woman that won the national title...not the whole team, not women as you put it.

Congrats though! I heard the pace was pretty quick and it's always nice to see someone from a "familiar face" do well at a NCAA national championship...
