A lot of people don't like him, but he makes a heck of a video game. I guess Frank Calliendo will have to finally get some new material.

John Madden is calling it quits.
NBC said Thursday that the burly ex-coach who has been one pro football's top broadcast analysts has decided to retire. Madden, 73, has been working for the past three seasons on NBC's Sunday night NFL game. His last telecast was the Super Bowl between Arizona and Pittsburgh.
Since he left coaching in 1979, the former Oakland Raiders coach has worked as an analyst for all four broadcast networks. His Madden NFL Football is the top-selling sports video game of all time.
Madden is reluctant to fly and often traveled to games in a specially equipped bus. He said in a statement that he still loves all aspects of the job, "but I know this is the right time."

I've always liked Madden, but I'm a Raiders Fan. As an announcer he probably knows more about the game of football than anyone else on the air. I didn't realize he was 73- he's done well and deserves to step down and enjoy family, etc. I wish him well.

hmm, I thought it seemed about time for him to retire. I never actually felt he would and he would be around forever... He has left quite a legacy.
I've heard EA sports is slowly trying to remove the Madden name from their game. Started by removing him from the broadcasting booth of the game last year.

Madden is great in many ways-- He makes football fun (which is the point) and has great stories. But as others have noted he could get a bit annoying. In any case I have enjoyed him thoroughly over the years.

Loved listening to Madden - he will be truly missed.
On the bright side, football's actually developed some decent announcers over the past few years. As much as I despise the cowboys, Aikman's ended up being a terrific announcer.
Any chance that Madden can see about taking Chris Collingsworth into retirement with him, though? There's a guy I can't stand.

xlolx He slaps his name on those and watches the dough roll in; he has very little to do with making them.

I liked him. As a former player I appreciated an announcer who could draw the X's and O's and know what the **** he is talking about.
Although I'll never forget when the Patriots won the Super Bowl against the Rams his strategy was for the Patriots to sit on the ball and try to win the thing in OT. Glad he wasn't coaching the Pats that day.

It's easy to make fun of Madden, but he is what he is. I'll miss him.

When EA first made a football game, it was actually Madden who taught them about football theories and tactics. Sure, he might not have programmed the game, but his contribution to the game has been vital to the success of this franchise.

I remember he was calling a game in Pittsburgh with Summerall and the 2 of them were trying to figure out what happened to the water when the 3 rivers met at one spot. Tried to find something online about it but couldn't.

Madden. Enough said. Who cares and it is about time he left the booth. He has been stuttering his way through games for years.

If you haters think that his days as a color guy were bad... it's only going to get worse. He's being replaced by Cris Collinsworth. Possibly the most worthless football commentator ever. I'm torn because I love listening to Al Michaels... but Collinsworth may be enough for me to mute Sunday Night Football.

Always liked Madden. Enjoyed his quirky humor and the stories he'd relate to the game he was working. I'm gonna miss him. xnodx

EA wanted to make the game 7 on 7, glad he got them straight.

I love the NFL but I rarely watch MNF because of Tirico, Kornheiser and Jaworski.
I've always liked Micheals and Madden together. Oh well, guess I'll add the Sunday night game to my list of unwatchables because of craptastic commentators. xbawlingx

Forgot about that combo. Yes indeed.
Semi-related. About the only time I can force myself to watch baseball was the Sunday night ESPN game featuring Jon Miller and Joe Morgan.

I wonder whether Harry Kalas' death helped prompt this decision. Kalas was 73, also, and maybe his sudden death in the booth caused John to make the decision final. I generally have liked Madden, although he could be a little much at times. He did bring an energy and good observations from both a player and coach perspective.

Wow.. am I the only one that didn't like Madden? I mean I can absolutely respect what he has accomplished, but I honestly would usually watch the game on mute if he was broadcasting.

Loved him awhile ago, but the past 5 years or so he was downgraded to 'liked'. I grew up on NFL football with him calling most of the games I watched. Or so it seemed.

I like Madden - I think he's guilty of being "Captain Obvious" sometimes, but he does bring a lot of insight to the game.
I just hope when I'm 73 I'm not in diapers....xnonono2x
