the Packers? That's kind of weird. Apparently he used to be a really good football player but I have to imagine by taking this much time off, you can't just come back and play quarterback. Other positions, maybe but not QB.
Look at his high school football career - pretty good -
Though Paulus, from Syracuse, N.Y., opted for the Blue Devils as a basketball player, he is not without some serious football credentials. He was offered a football scholarship by Notre Dame as well as the University of Miami, and was a former Gatorade football player of the year at Christian Brothers Academy.
Paulus, 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, was a four-time all-state football player; a starter in the U.S. Army All-American game; and set six state passing records. Christian Brothers was 42-3 during his time there, and he had 11,763 career passing yards and 152 touchdown passes in 45 games.

Well you can always come back and try and play, but yeah I was quite shocked when an NFL team was working him out considering he never even played at the college level.

Might be looking for a future backup to Rodgers. xoopsx
It's kind of strange, maybe they should look at Joe Mauer, he's 6'6" and a former Gatorade Player of the Year. :o

Matt Cassel never took a snap in college and look at him now.
Yeah but the fact that he was on the team, was analyzing film, practicing with a top team in the country has to help. If Paulus wants to play in the pros, I like the fact that he is looking to play a year in college.

Antonio Gates never played college football, for what it's worth (basketball was his sport at Kent State) . . . but yeah, playing QB is a whole other animal.

Paulus needs to rethink this IMO:
* He MIGHT be able to have a pro basketball career
* He's been out of football for a while
* He's not likely to be a NFLer with his limited playing time
* Duke's FB coach said he didn't have a chance at Duke to be QB, which says something
* If he has to * God forbid * fall back on his education to make a career, would you rather have Duke or UM on your resume?

A quote from an article says:
[QUOTE]Cutcliffe told Paulus that if his goal was to play quarterback, he didn't have much of a shot at Duke. The Blue Devils have a fourth-year returning starter in Thaddeus Lewis
It's tough to replace a fourth year returning starter for a new guy coming in for only 1 year. The existing starter has too much with the team already and the new guy will not be with the team for more than a year.
---
As for the education, Paulus would be going to grad school which means he will already have his undergrad at Duke. As Ashville stated, both Duke and Michigan are great schools and both can help you get good jobs even if this was for undergrad.
---
Agree with your top 3 points though assuming by pro career you mean somewhere in Europe with long shot in the US.

I certainly didn't mean any disrespect to UM as an academic institution - it's a fine school, but arguably not quite on the same level as a Duke, Stanford, etc. That was my only point regarding the comparison.
Thanks for finding the Duke coach's quote - my point was that Duke certainly doesn't (recently) have the football reputation that UM does, and it's surprising that Rodriguez could find a spot for him at QB when Duke couldn't.

He would still graduate from Duke as he would have taken over 90% of his courses there. He may even graduate by the end of this semster and he can take additional undergrad classes or grad school classes at Michigan.
He just doesnt fit into the system as Duke-- they need a tall NFL type QB to run that offense, but he may be a fit at the Michigan system. Paulus is about the same size and has similar athletic ability as Pat White who flourished under Rich Rod-- I think it can work.

It may be tough to understand this for those of you who never saw him play in high school.
Paulus was the best high school QB I have ever seen. He was the #1 football recruit in the country in high school and had his choice of any school he wanted. If he had gone to ND like he was leaning, it is very possible that he would be sitting here with at least 1 Heisman trophy and looking at a first round draft spot. That's how good he was in high school.
that kind of natural talent doesn't disappear. He's a project for any NFL team, but they can get him on the cheap (free agent) and develop him into a Drew Brees type of QB.

ESPN is reporting Michigan has offered him a shot. xeekx
Syracuse is also interested.
ESPN Link (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4073430)
Former Duke basketball player Greg Paulus has been given an opportunity to join Michigan's football team and compete for the starting quarterback job this fall.
Paulus, a former All-American quarterback in high school, visited Michigan's final practice of the spring Tuesday in Ann Arbor. He did not throw or work out for Wolverines coaches.
"There has been an opportunity given there," Paulus said Thursday morning on a conference call with reporters. "I thought it was a really good visit. It was really helpful to get to be on a campus and meet with coach [Rich] Rodriguez and see the system and understand what types of opportunities are out there."
