Beckett Suspended

MLB has suspended Josh Beckett for 6 games because they say he intentionally threw a pitch at Bobby Abreau that resulted in benches clearing twice in Anaheim.

The incident occured because the umpire granted Abreau timeout when Beckett was already in his windup. I have seen many many wacky results of pitches being thrown when timeout is granted in the middle of a windup.

It's more ridiculous that you think this wasn't intentional. While I doubt he was head hunting, he definitely threw it at Abreu and then he acted like a moron after the fact. 6 games seems fair, he'll likely appeal and get it knocked down a few games so he'll only miss one start.

Jesus Christ its 1 start and he did throw at him Beckett started the benches to clear by walking towards Abreu and flailing his arms

“Did he throw it up and in? Yeah. Do we believe he threw it at Abreu? No. Would we have warned him had both benches not emptied? Probably not, but because both benches emptied, we did issue a warning,” explained West.

Beckett was in the middle of his windup when time out was granted, its kinda foolish to assume he could actually intentionally redirect his aim to Abreau's head at that point...

Like pitchers are told he followed through and released the ball to prevent possibility of injury, as in almost all cases of a pitch being released after time out was granted the ball followed some crazy trajectory... to say it was intentional is ridiculous and unsubstantiated.

I just watched it for a 3rd and 4th time. It sounds to me like "time" was called before he even picked his foot up. As he picked his foot up the umps hands went in the air and it wasn't until he was in the middle of his windup did the umpire step to the side. To me it looks 100% intentional and his actions after the fact didn't help matters.

Obviously MLB saw something similar or they wouldn't have handed down this suspension. What the umpires saw in real-time could be different then what the league can see in slo-mo so I wouldn't put too much stock in what Joe West said.

If Beckett had the kinds of history say Roger Clemens or Pedro Martinez had, I could see him being suspended for intentionally throwing at his head... But Beckett doesn't have the history and with the circumstances of time out being granted when Beckett was already going I dont see how they can say it was intentional.

You don't know how long before that Abreu called Time out. I don't think Becket necessarily through at his head, but he certainly was trying to make a point. He could have easily took something off the pitch when he saw that time was called.

That's exactly what I said, he picked his foot up as the ump signaled time out. However, you can hear the ump calling timeout prior to him going into motion. Nice screen shot, btw.

if that is the case, then he is just a really sucky pitcher, and you should be glad he won't be making that start.

Yes, he should have gone ahead and completed the pitch, even if time had been called. but just because time is called doesn't give any reason why that should adversely affect the pitchers control to that extent.

On the flip side, that's a pathetic excuse for both benches to clear anyway.

You can follow through very easily without throwing a 94 mph pitch. I don't think he should have had to stop his windup. He needed to just loft it in there like every other pitcher does.
