PSU Vikings Returns 16 Starters, Experienced Group In 2009

*The Portland State football program opens spring practice with the intent of making a bigger jump in improvement over last year. The Vikings come off a 4-7 season, one game better than the 3-8 mark of 2007. Spring football begins on April 20 with practice at Stott Community Field.

16 starters and a strong core group coming back, yet a slew of recruits and still some uncertainty at a few positons. Combined with playing in a vastly improved conference top to bottom and the frightening biennial trip to Missoula results in one of the biggest question marks in the country.

16 starters and a strong core group coming back, yet a slew of recruits and still some uncertainty at a few positons. Combined with playing in a vastly improved conference top to bottom and the frightening biennial trip to Missoula results in one of the biggest question marks in the country.

PSU will again be a hard team to figure out. The offense has shown flashes of brilliance the past two years, and finally they should have an experienced-enough QB and solid O-line to finally pull everything together into one of the scariest offenses in the Big Sky (along with Weber).

But the D will probably be the achilles heel again. Of the 6 lost starters from last year, almost all of them are in the linebacker or secondary corps. Losing Schantz is a killer, as he was the leader of the defense and probably the team's best player last year.
