Braddy says JSU needs $500,000 to save some sports

Jackson State might be forced to drop some sports if the athletic department’s financial situation does not improve, administrators say.

Offering 18 intercollegiate sports on a $6.5 million budget, the department is scraping to get through the 2008-09 fiscal year that ends June 30. If more money is not raised through donations and sponsorships, JSU might have to eliminate two or three sports, athletic director Bob Braddy said.

Sign of the times...

There's definitely some PWCs out there who are having the exact same problemsas the HBCUs, but the SWAC schools do not need those 18 sports as they once mandated, which I am guessing is why most of the programs that cut from 18 have done so. They can trim it down, especially those non-revenues that are viewed as non-competitive (i.e Jackson State's tennis teams, who do not get results posted on their web site anyway).

Jafus said on TSPN that half of the schools in the SWAC already come short on the full allotment of scholarships. That was mentioned as a solution. Could some of the non-revenue sports cut scholarships further? They may already not have the full amount. You'd be surprised what "MAJOR" schools don't fully fund certain sports.
