View Full Version : Bad bracket picks

I know we all make questionable picks (like me: Illinois to the Sweet 16 what was thinking? xconfusedx) but I see a few picks for Wake to get to the Final 4. I never saw them as that kind of team, just wanted to hear thoughts as to why you picked them. You can also explain any other shots in the dark.
I'll start: I have no earthly idea what made me pick Illinois as a Sweet 16 team. Florida State - well that was a homer pick I thought they could match up well with Xavier before losing to Pitt a second time. I had Wake beating Arizona and losing to Louisville so that wasn't too bad. And I picked Washington to beat Purdue.

I had Florida St and Ilinois in the sweet 16 too. Along with Wake Forest I lost all three in the opening round, luckily I had them all losing in the sweet 16.

that's the best thing for me all those teams I lost were picked to lose in the Sweet 16. Elite 8 and Final 4 still intact. And my champ too as long as this guy keeps stepping up:

I have missed 1 sweet 16 like most...I had Utah in Arizonas spot...I figured Wake would collapse, but didnt think Arizona was going to kick ass so much

I entered a pool with about 150 people so I felt like I couldn't fill out my bracket with a piece of chalk so I decided to try a few upsets. My final 4 was Wake/Uconn/Pitt/Zaga. I am so mad at myself for picking Wake. As a Syracuse fan, I know about Cleveland State and should of realized this is the exact team Wake would struggle with. I still believe if they had gotten past that game they could of beaten teams like UL or Mich St. Wake lost to poor teams all year and I should of never picked them to beat Cleveland St. I'm sure next week I'll be writing on how I never should of picked Gonzaga over UNC, but who knows.

I put too much trust into the ACC as well. Its just too up and down, they can dominate at times, but they can also fail hard, which they did.
Depending on the bracket, I had 3 in the sweet 16 that lost in the first round (Wake, FSU, and Clemson). Also missed BC in 1st rd. At least I didn't put any further than the 16 and in my money bracket I didn't have Clemson in the 16. Luckily my money bracket is local and most others put the same trust in ACC, if not more.
After some of the other close games, my final four isn't looking as strong, mainly Pitt and MI St.

I had Minnesota in the Sweet 16. No other reasons, really, other than that I like them and it's always fun to pick against Duke. And they are coached by Tubby Smith, after all, so I figured he was a guy who could work some magic. Oh well. It was a shot in the dark, and I don't regret it.

really? xconfusedx I didn't put much faith in ACC teams outside of UNC, Duke, Wake, and FSU (seeing as this was their first trip in 11 years the homer in me came out) Clemson has a history of starting fast and tanking, I thought BC could beat USC (who got hot at the right time), Cal/Maryland was a toss up to me.

Don't feel bad, I have a hard time not putting in the school of the blind to beat dook every year. Have 'Nova beating them , hope that doesn't backfire.

Ok, so, um, I also had Clemson in the Elite 8. I guess I drank the ACC Kool-Aid like a few others did, and figured the Tigers could get hot. But in retrospect, picking a team that never gets out of the first round to beat a Beilein-coached team in the first round was not wise. Which makes picking them to win two more games on top of that just downright foolish.

I had them getting out of the first round but I saw them play too many times to put much stock in them making a run. Here's a tip about Clemson for next year, they'll start 15-0 or similar and close cold as can be. xlolx

I severely underestimated Xavier. I mean, I had them surviving the 1st round, but it seems like they have a decent shot at upending Pitt who I have as NC (I filled out my bracket in 2 mins without any real research :D)
I also have Kansas in my Final Four, but I don't think they'll get by Michigan State. I just didn't want to pick four 1 seeds advancing to the Final Four, anybody can pick that. I also have Memphis and Syracuse advancing (I know, I know :p)

I looked at BYU's stats and I loved their combination of defense and outside shooting to give a team like UConn a fit. Unfortunately, those stats came against the Sisters of the Poor. Once they played a genuinely talented team like TAMU, they were history. That was my bad.
To some degree I did the same with UCLA, though that I thought was a better pick. Villanova did little, IMO, during the year to prove that they deserved not only a No. 3 seed but two "home games" at the Wachovia center, and I didn't think UCLA would be harmed at all by that "home game" thing, but they really were.
Syracuse was very high on my "upset watch" too, and I'm surprised they creamed Arizona State so handily. Maybe I just overrated the entire Pac 10 (well, excpet for Arizona xrolleyesx )

In my money bracket I also have Memphis, MI St, Pitt, and 'Cuse (as much as I hate it as an UNC fan - Lawson influenced). Those differences make it possible to pass the 2 ahead of me in that pool though.

My two big screw-ups were in the Midwest Region. I had Wake playing USC in the elite 8 there. I saw them as two teams that had the talent to beat anybody, but had problems with motivation. I figured they'd be able to get properly motivated for the tournament. I still don't know how Michigan State beat USC, and I'm pretty confident that Louisville will pound whoever wins their game with Kansas.
Outside of those two, the only Sweet 16 team I missed was Florida State. I picked them due to my lack of faith in Xavier.

I'm in first place all alone in one pool and tied for second in the other. I thought Wake and Clemson would at least get through the first round before they got whacked, so I got burned there. FWIW, I've got Louisville in one pool and UNC in the other.

Wake's my team since I paid them a lot of money over three years xnonono2x They're young and too erratic so I had them going to the second round only so the damage wasn't as bad as if I'd made my homer pick. It was weird watching them beat Clemson, UNC, Duke, Boston College, and getting #1 within 10 days only to get beat by Georgia Tech and Miami in the following weeks xoopsx

Yeah, working here probably made me pick them to win the first 2 rounds. Don't have a clue why I thought FSU could do that as well.

Probably why I thought they could do well. Being a UNC fan that influenced it as well. Got yelled at by other UNC fans here for not having them winning it in my money bracket. Kinda hope that works as a reverse jinx.

In my dept there are 4 UNC fans, 1 VT, 1 Dook, and the other 3 are Wake fans. Its always a battle. Friday we got to wear 'wake' stuff to work, more App and UNC stuff it seemed.
The lady above our whole area is a Penn State fan, that is a little weird.

My bad bracket picks are entirely due to
(1) My entire lack of knowledge about anything related to college basketball.
and
(2) ....well, nevermind, number 1 pretty much covers it.
I'm last here, and my wife is last in her poll at work, but I think I'll still defeat her. She picked a bracket of straight upsets, with the exception of giving NDSU the win in the final. 'bout brings a tear to my eye!

I applied to a couple things at App before getting on here, granted Wake has many more jobs due to the hospital, etc.
